Thermostat???
I read an article that talked about replacing the thermostat in t.b.i cars and the author suggested a 170 degree stat. I went to the local parts store and told them that i needed a 170 degree thermostat and he said that it would make the car run too cold. He recommended a 190 degree. What should I buy for my 92 R.S. 305 t.b.i.
I have a 160* in my car so I am not sure what he is talking about.

It all depends on what part of the country you live in. Ideally, you don't want the temp below 160. I got a 160* now and it has varied from 150 to about 180 depending on the wheather. I had a 180* before and it stayed at 205-215 and went barely over 220 on super hot summer days. I like my 160* much more. 170 would probably be ideal for me to avoid dipping below 160 but I've never seen one.

Hey check this out!!! When you run a 160 stat. it makes the car stay in warm up mode.....meaning the car dumps more fuel and air to warm the car up.....which goes back to the saying "More fuel and More Air= MORE POWER" if you run a 170 stat it will make the car will run in a closed loop operation "LESS FUEL AIR AND POWER" So don't listen to the dude at the parts store he is probably not into HI PREFORMANCE. I run a 160 in my 89 TA and it runs like a bat out of hell. Run a stant P/N 13006 an you will be happy. If you have any questions E-Mail me a idrag2@yahoo.com

If you can't find a 170 degree stat. try this. Buy a 180 and drill two 1/8 whole through it. I did this on my monte carlo, soon to do on my camaro. Essentailly what you are doing is lowering the temp that the the themostat opens at. well, not really, but the holes make a small bypass past the valve so it will circulate colder. I did not make this up, I read it in a HI-Perf. mag. Can't remember what one though. It does work. Give it a try.

i run 160 in the summer and in the stop and go traffic here along with the weather, if had the stock thermo in the fan would run abot every 2 min. THen in the winter when it gets cold i go back to a stock thermo so the car heats up properly and i get some heat as well.
