Surging Idle?

My car has a surging idle. It'll go up to about 750 RPM and then drops down to 500 RPM. Any ideas about what this might be? Also my battery gauge is reading 8, is that right?

The voltmeter should read 13-14, not 8. Get your battery and altenator checked.

The ECM will raise the idle speed to compensate for low voltage, thus the surging.

I had a problem like that, only the idle would go from 500 to 750 and back down until it stalled out (happened when the a/c compressor is on). I had to adjust the alternator, but check the battery first.
