These are some shots of my 385; not done yet but getting damn close...

And it's going in here...

Probably should have chosen a color that gets dirtier easier huh?

very nice, but why would you use a Performer on a 385? Why is it so far forward?

Thanks for all the compliments fellas! It's been a lot of work and that makes it all worthwhile!
but why would you use a Performer on a 385? Why is it so far forward?
Well, that's what I had. The rpm range is good and I've heard nothing but good things about it so... I've also got a Torker II but when running it through Desktop Dyno there wasn't much change in HP or torque - it just moved further up the power band. Seeing as this combo should take me to 6000ish I wasn't really concerned. If you have another manifold you want to donate or if you want to stroke me a check for another one, it's Cauffiel with two "f"'s...

i would however suggest a new wiper tank. other than that. beautiful engine. what does it take to build something like that?
Well, I've gotten a couple of quotes from Dal on stuff, one of them was a new resevoir. Turns out GM discontinued them in '97 so I'm checking out the classifieds. They are damn near impossible to find in junkyards in good condition. I walked up on one that was beautiful, went to grasp it and it shattered like it was porcelain. Too much time in the sun, I guess. What you are looking at is about $4500 worth of red paint, steel, and powdercoat. Not to mention about a years worth of planning.

You gonna have enough clearance with that deep sump pan?
I had certainly better! It's gonna be low, but at this point it's unavoidable. I've also got a deeper aluminum transmission pan so parking lots with their attendant speed bumps are going to be the bane of my existence, not to mention my steep driveway... I'm kinda bummin though, I have to pull the pan to install two aluminum bungs in it for the future install of the turbos. It's always the little stuff you forget that you wind up doing over and over and over and...

I don't know if anyone noticed I moved the AIR diverter valve over to the battery tray next to the MSD 6A. I was gonna sh!tcan it, but I think eventually we're all going to be under emissions law so decided to keep it. I'm going to run one of the lines to a bung welded into my header collector (the lines that would normally go to each primary) and the other to the cat as normal. I'll have to do a tech article on it for those of you looking to clean up the engine a bit.

If it works.

Thanks again guys,
Steve

You think that you could paint the wiper tank? It would probably look really good if it was white with a red cap...Just a thought, I don't know how well paint would stick to something like that.

I say you just make one out of some sheet aluminium.

O ya, and youll need one of those new tbi units. hmmmm, who is making those, i cant remember.

What are you going to do about tuning etc.. Have you been thinking about chip stuff etc..?

When is eta of going in.

Hmmm, maybe with some of that vinyl or bumper paint, maybe even model/plastic paint, I'll have to check and see.

Man, if I had the talent for that... Well, my car would be done already. That would look **** though.

Hmmm, can't recall... Hey, if they perform better than the Holley I'll have no problem with that. You need a test bed?

I'm going to run the stock computer with 80# injectors just to get it running. Once I'm sure it's running I'm going to swap in my Haltech computer and learn to program that. Looking at starting next Monday for the install. Still have a few parts to get... like the distributor, a Griffin aluminum radiator (may get it in anodized red), all new sensors. Oh yeah, then make sure I know where all the wires go...

There is NOTHING wrong with using the Performer manifold. You will be very happy with it.

EDIT: The reason the TBI unit is forward (Holley adapter?) is that it helps to not overload the rear cylinders with fuel. The Edelbrock TBI is notoriously BAD in that regard. ie, the throttle blades "aim" the air/fule mixture backwards, the forwardness of the TBI unit allows for a little more vaporization of the mixture...

Yeah, I'm itching pretty bad... It'll get done and when it does, stand back.

Jon and Tim... I'd hate to meet you guys in person and then spank you, I'd feel bad.

Well, for a couple of seconds anyway. While you caught up.
