Anybody know whats wrong w/my car???
I have a '91 TBI Firebird that has been causing a buncha little problems lately.
Ok, first, the fuse that controls my trunk release, power locks, mirrors and dome light keeps on blowing. Whenever I change the fuse, i blow it out the second i put the new one in.
Ahh, second, is something is wrong w/my headlights. I have a hard time switching from bright to dim. I have to put on my left blinker to make it switch to dim.
Next, my speedo hesitates after I first start my car. It usually takes about 10-15 minutes for the thing to actually start working, it usually doesnt move right away.
OK, last one is that my oil pressure gauge keeps on going crazy, but its not a mechanical problem, it just like always jumps up and down.
If anyone could help me out with theese, i would be greatly appreciative.
Thanks...TiM

I can help you with the first two, but I'm not too sure about the other ones.
1. The reason your fuse keeps blowing is probably because you have a short somewhere. To find out for sure, hook a multimeter up to the fuse block, change the dial (or whatever your particular meter has) to amperage/dc/somewhere around 10 amps max. if anything shows up, this means you do have a short. this can be a bitch to find since that one fuse is wired to several different components, but it can be done. Simply check for bare wires under the hood and the dash first, then use the method I described above on the wiring going to your hatch, mirrors, etc.
2. I have the same problem with my brights; it is due to a faulty switch in the steering column. I believe the switch is somewhere around $10, but I've heard it's a bitch to put in. It may be easier to wire a floor-mounted dimmer.
Hope this helps.

My oil pressure guage travels with the throttle. If you give it gas, it rises to a certain degree. Mine rises to 45 and idles between 25-30, but it changes constantly.
Good luck with the wiring, if you have the money, have a dealer do it. Otherwise have fun running the wire diagrams. Wiring is something I hate doing with a passion. Another cause of fuse blowouts is accessories like cell phone chargers, using the lighter, and cd players, if it is on the same circuit, that could be the cause.
Question for everyone, is the speedo wire driven and is it lubricated? That may be the problem, the coating broke somewhere and it freezes (not always the literal sense) when the car sits and cools down until it frees itself up.
Your easiest route with the light dimmer is do what Tab92bird said, get a floor mounted one.

Find out where all the relay connectors are that tie into the fuse you keep blowing and disconnect them. Then systematically re-connect them one at a time and watch for the fuse to blow. This should help narrow it down to an individual ckt.

Your speedo problem is more than likely your vss, since you should have an electric speedo. Try changing the vss which is on the tailshaft of the tranny that has a 2 wire plug in it. Use the vss from the GM dealership parts store so you won't have to change 3 times to get a good one. The way to figure out which vss you need, you will have to look on your service parts sticker and find the code for it (D8A-I and K-N or D9A-E). When you change it you will get about a cup of tranny fluid out and remember which way your gear goes on there, it just a slip fit. This is all assuming you have a 700 though. I'm not sure if the 5 speed has the same set-up.
