LIke i said, i dont know alot about cars. Whats an open element, how i get it, where it goes?. Cam, only cam i know is a cam shaft. plz explain, and 3.73 gears i dont understand any of this jibba jabba, what is this, how i get them better or to 3.73
Ill help you out.
Open air element. Look under your hood and youll see your air filer. Its big, black, and has a hose running to the headlight area.
Open element basically eliminates all the filter, when you have it you will have a metal piece on the bottom, your filter in the middle, and a metal piece on top. The advantage is that it sucsk air from all sides and not just from the hose that leads to the headlight.
Gears: You probbaly have 2.73 gears in your rear end right now. Those are highway gears because they are so low. The lower the ratio number, the less your car will be workign to be at a certain speed. I think the top speed with 2.73 for a stock 305 TBI is like 130. With 3.73 gears your top speed is like 100, maybe more Im not sure, but your car will accelerate faster. The higher the gear the faster it accelerates.
If you want to change them have a shop do it and expect to pay at least $500. Your car will burn rubber if you get the 3.73's.

You might consider slightly lower gears if you have an auto transmission, or if you do any highway driving (like 3.42)

the first place you may want to start is with a magazine so you can learn more of the lingo. any copy of car craft or super chevy should have all the info to give you a better idea of what we are talking about.
as far as the gear thing goes, think of it like a ten speed bike, when the smaller the front gear and the bigger the back gear the easier it was to peddle. the car feels the same way about the rear end gearing. the higher the number is the bigger the rear gear is compared to the front gear, this is why you will sometimes hear people say,"more gear" or something like that. with the gears you will want a good posi unit, posi makes it so that when you hit the gas the car tries to push with both rear tires, an open or peg leg rear is when you hit the gas and it does a one wheeled burn out.
3.73 gears are great for our cars, with the overdrive tranny they are still pretty good on the highway.
