92 305 TBI Won't Start
92 305 TBI Won't Start
Ok the story behind this car is it is a regular firebird with a 305 TBI that i got from a junk yard for free(know the owner well). Anyway it looked too nice to see goto the crusher
My question is: When I try to start it up it turns over and i hear like air blowing out the carb. I asked some people and they said the engine is probably just shot but I wanted to hear it from you guys. Thanks for any input

First of all TBI is not a carb.
It could be several things. I would first check the timing. Just turn the motor by hand with your finger over the #1 spark plug hole. When you feel pressure against your finger slowly turn the motor over until the line on the dampener lines up with 0 degrees on the timing marks. Then take off your distributor cap and make sure the end of the rotor is very close to place where the #1 spark plug wire hooks to the cap. If it ain't you will have to turn the distributor until it does. But first try to turn the rotor. If it turns freely your gear may be broke off or cam broke or timing chain broke. I don't know how easy it would turn if timing chain is broke.
The only reason it would be blowing air out the TBI is becuase your intake valves are open when it fires or is completely out of time. IF it still does that without the plugs firing then you will have to reset timing at the timing chain.
IF you check all that and it still does it then next step would be to tear it apart and figure what is broke.

Yeah not carb sorry I was about to fall asleep at the comp last night, barely had time to ask the question
Anyway when I get back from work today i'll give that a shot but I'm assuming since it's in really good condition and it ended up at the junk yard and came from a mechanic's shop that's it's going to be the cam in which case I already have a wrecked 89 GTA I bought for 200 bucks with a 5.7 ready to go in just going to be a while before I get around to that
Thanks for the help i'll tell what happens tonight
