drop base v.s. flat o.e.

tomorrow I'm buying a open element, I've put it off too long. Which is better? I thought a drop, but I saw a tas reply, and don't know. Please help, I'm going to C&J speed shop with money in my pocket tomorrow after work.

Go with the flat base. It may be a little harder to find, but better for flow. The element can't be more than 3" tall, or else the top will rub the insulation. I paid $39.95 for a chrome summit box, flat base, with a reusable K&N type filter included. I think that's probably the best deal you're going to find. One slight problem with that setup. I had to flip the lid to allow the stock stud to reach. A longer stud is included with the kit, but it's for carbs. I hear that truck studs are longer, and will work.
Big bang for the buck.

ya when I put the 14x3" on I needed a new carb stud. To get home with the new filter in I needed to flip my lid which is slightly conical in shape. This is not always the case though. People do have 14x3" flat based open elements with the stock TBI stud.

It all depends on teh brand you get. I got the non-drop that Pep-Boys carries, and I didn't need to do a thing to the stud, it fits just fine.

I ended up buying a Mr. Gasket 14x3 drop base. I feel that they look better and preform the same. best 32 bucks I ever spent. and thanks to snflupiqus the installation couldn't have been easier. Now my car has a mean growl when i step on it.
