Sure you can go 12's in that car, but like the old saying goes...Speed takes money, How fast do you want to go.

Yes you can run 12s on a 305, however you could do it easier with the 350 simply because the motor is bigger and most importantly, the number of cylinder heads for the larger bore 350 is much greater than those made for the smaller bore 305.
In my opinion, if you have the money, just go ahead and shoot for the 350. In the end, you'll have better cylinder head selection, not to mention 45 extra cubes. The only reason why I would stay with the 305 is so the Mustang guys don't complain that you have a bigger engine when you beat them (yeah 3 cubes bigger, but hey, that's not much). I'm in college right now, so I have to stick with the 305 since I don't have money for anything else.
Regardless of which route you take, you're gonna need some serious bottom end hardware (forged crank, stock rods are supposedly good to 450 hp, and either forged or hypereutectic pistons), a good set of cylinder heads, a cam that will allow the engine to breath good, a full exhaust setup, and possibly a new tranny.
It's also important to be able to put the power to the ground once you've got your engine making it. A new set of LCAs and a good torque arm should help you hook up. Slicks probably wouldn't hurt either.
Hope this helps,
Jason

12's. not without a supercharger, nos, cam heads, crank, pistons, ignition, well. everything will need changed. and it will cost more to get it to 12's that buying a 350 and getting it to 12's.
i think there was an aussie with a 12 second lo3 tbi car, it had nos, and a supercharger. huge rearend, etc..

you can run 12's on a 305 with out all kinds of wild stuff. i don't know why people think that you need to do anything huge to get there. all though nitrous does help a lot, just ask camaroracer1992
it would have to be a total car combo. including a reasonble diet(car would need to be 3200lbs prolly) the right gears( 3.73's or 4.10's prolly) and a suspension that is optimized for drag racing.
the engine would need a big block or holley 670cfm TB and a good performance intake, either one of the bigger dual plains or a smallish single plains shoudl work. good heads with a 60cc or smaller combustion chamber to keep the compression as high as possible. as far as the cam goes, you could stay with the roller, duration is a good way to build power, but try to keep the lift below the .460 total mark, beyond that you are getting into air flow problems.
remember that et's are more about grip and gears than big hp numbers and you will be in good shape. a matched combo will get the job done with out a bunch of power adders.
