Smog Issues - HELP ASAP
I know the thread is long, but just please read and offer any help you can, it is needed badly!
I just took my car in today for the 3rd or 4th smog attempt, and it failed again. The last time I took it in I was confident it would pass. I had the cooling issue fixed, and other minor issues I was having. However, I soon realized after failing that time that the chip I had in my car was not CA smog approved. So I went to a junk yard and found a chip for my car. Turns out the chip is actually for an Automatic car, but I was told that the chip would still work fine in my car for emissions. However, that did not prove to be the case today.
Here are my results from the previous smog on 11-15-06 (I had a Jet Stage II chip installed at this time):
15mph - 1814rpm - CO2(%) 13.50 - O2 (%) 1.69 - HC (PPM) MAX allowable was 110, my car measured 31 - CO(%) MAX allowable was .71, my car measured .05 - NO (PPM) MAX allowable was 772, my car measured 1057
25mph - 2023rpm - CO2(%) 13.57 - O2(%) 1.57 - HC (PPM) MAX allowable 85, my car measured 32 - CO(%) MAX allowable was .59, my car measured .03 - NO (PPM) MAX allowable was 711, my car measured 843
Here are the results from today (2-28-07), and this is with the stock TBI chip installed. The chip was out of an A4 car, mine is an M5 car:
15mph - 1875rpm - CO2(%) 12.80 - O2(%) 2.60 - HC(PPM) MAX allowable 110, my car measured 176 - CO(%) MAX allowable was .71, my car measured .68 - NO (PPM) MAX allowable was 772, my car measured 2246
25mph - 2073rpm - CO2(%) 13.50 - O2(%) 2.10 - HC(PPM) MAX allowable 85, my car measured 61 - CO(%) MAX allowable .59, my car measured .02 - NO(PPM) MAX allowable was 711, my car measured 1800
As you can see, the NO went up drastically, well some other measurements went up slightly. As a result of this test my car is considered a Gross Polluter. How do I go about getting this numbers down? This make no sense to me. The stock chip was supposed to lower these numbers I thought. Timing is set at 0 degrees w/the connector disconnected.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!

with the numbers you posted, im going to say your cat is probably working ok.
the auto chip may well have a little more aggressive timing in it than what a chip for a standard trans has.
also, it looks like the stock chip you used wasn't turning on the EGR, which would explain why NOx went up so high.
the after market performance chips i have looked at normally don't make any changes to part throttle setting, so you may be able to get a pass with the jet chip by turning the timing down 2 degrees & see what numbers you get.
don't set the timing lower than 2 degrees from the factory setting or you will fail for that.
if you can find the right factory chip & set the timing 2 degrees slow would probably be the best bet.

I also forgot to mention. After I set the timing back to 0 degrees (or so I think, it is hard to read the gauge on the timing cover), the car was running like crap. It would ping throughout every gear when accelerating. After a while, it finally stopped pinging in the higher gears; but in first gear you can still hear it really clearly. Furthermore, lately I have been having an issue with my car where once in a while the power will instantly cut out, and I can put the pedal to the floor and get no response. But then all of a sudden, the power will come back, then cut and come back and cut, etc. It will continue to do this until I pull over, disconnect the O2 sensor, then reconnect it and everything will be fine again for a while. Also, ever since installing the stock chip, whenever I try to run the car hard after it is warm, the SES light comes up. The code is Code 43. As a result, I replaced the pigtail connector on the knock sensor (since I wasn't even sure if my old connecter worked or not). It hasn't seemed to do anything noticeable. However, with the Jet Stage II chip in prior, I never got the code 43. Just thought I'd throw this information out there too. I had forgotten to post it last night when creating this thread.
