Open Element Question

Hello.
I am going open element in the next 3 weeks but would like to know three things.
First is the extreme kit from K&N Airfilters. Has anyone actually used that on top of there K&N Airfilter in place of the shroud needed to make and open element system? What are the peformance specs on it? Can you hear it better?
Second off what do I need (besides time it self) to do a conversation? Is there any kit out there for that? I know I need a breather but what else do I need? Any none Ghetto ways of doing this swap?
Thrid and final is the heat factor. I will be swapping a electric fan on the car but should I keep the pulley fan as well? When you have an open element its clear that it does not draw air from the outside but instead it draws air from inside of the engine bay. IS this just a theory or does it actually do this and is open element just brought to be something good when indeed it really isn't.
Any Help Would Be Great..... I Have Questions And You May/May Not Have Answers.
Thanks,
Erik

The open element does make a large difference. The stock assembly cannot feed the engine at higher rpm, like an O.E. can. You will hear a difference in your exhaust note, and a swish sound when you get on it, as the engine breathes more freely.
As for the engine bay air, yes the air comes in warmer, but their are ways to feed it cooler air such as removing a portion of the hood seal at windshield (I am not doing this), or installing a cowl hood scoop (this is what I am doing). You can even run a duct hose to pick up cooler air and have it blow on the open element cleaner.
The open element will benefit you more if you get better intake/exhaust. but with stock intake/exhaust, it will just help throttle response, and a tad more horses at higher rpm. To get decent increase in horsepower without buying an intake manifold or such, look at the ultimate tbi mods in tech articles to Port the tbi for more flow, add a tbi spacer, injector spacer, and make your fuel pressure adjustable. With these changes alone (with the fuel pressure well tuned), some have claimed improvements of .2 - .6 off of 1/4 E.T.'s and a couple mph in the traps. Worthwhile? I would say so.

What types of 0-60 and 1/4mi gains would I see from an open element K&N intake on my 305 TBI?

thats tough to say, not many people bring thier car stock to the track and then put on an O.E. to see how much they dropped, but ive heard .1-.2 in the 1/4 mile
