Q about 327s

anyone know about them? I've seen that their pistons look a lot taller than 350 pistons. can you use longer rods? I remember one time a magazine used like Ford 6.250" inline 6 rodss with a 327 crank and 400 block to make a 350. They got 11:1 compression and used 87 octane. I've been thinking of a long rod 327 for my jeep. Lots of placed have 6.0" rods but I haven't seen any readily availible longer ones. Where would I find a rod and piston set like that? I know LS1s have 6.125" rods so it must be a good idea. A single plane TBI would go on top too. a simple intake swap every 2 years and its smog legal

A 327 uses the same bore block as the 350. 327 = 4.000" x 3.25" (5.7" rod) The pin location is lower on a 327 piston, and they are expensive. We ran a 327 in the racecar. For anyone who wants to do this they have a small journal and large journal version. You need the large journal if you run it in a 350 block

ya I know all that. I wanted to know about running longer rods since that pin is lower

Tas, check out the http://www.beckracing.com/store/shop.mpl web site, it has Keith Black pistons listed with a lot of info on compression height, ect... With a 6.2" rod with a stock 350 piston on a 3.25" stroke crank in a 350 block with 9.020 deck height the piston is still 0.117" in the hole. With a 6.25" rod it's still 0.067" in the hole. Sounds like a lot of decking to me but that might be an exceptable range I'm not sure. I think you would have to mill the intake as well. Looks like a 6.3 would be right in the hunt, thats why HR mag used the ford 300 inline six cyclinder rods then milled the block to take up the rest of the gap for an exceptable quence of around .040". Hope this helps.

A friend told my dad to build that combo for his racecar. He said that you need to get the special rod bearings that go from the ford 6cy rod to the chevy rod journal, and then play with deck heights.
