Better rear axle from WHAT car?
Better rear axle from WHAT car?
I know V6's had a good set o' gears in the rear, but after what year? I'm heading off to the junkyard this week, and I want to know if I can spot anything right away instead of having to wade around for a while :P

hey tas, brush up on your facts there bud........bahumet and tas go to the tech data part of this website and it has a list of all the gears and in what cars they were in.....bahumet- i personally would go with a fourth gen rear axle with 3.42's and a posi......they are plentiful down here and i like the ways the wheels will line up with the fender afterwards

I just checked the tech section and didn't see the transition year listed, but after research I found that the '82-'89 axles had 26 splines and the '90+ have 28

Hey, he was asking what year the rear axle got better. Not what set of gears were in it. You could have any gears in any year. But the fact is more splines can handle more power, so the 89 1/2+ axles are the BETTER choice. You can find any junk rear out of a 82 V6, but getting the 28 spline (89 1/2+) means you can pick up a posi-unit from SLP for $99 bucks, compared to a $350 unit from Auburn. The tech section says nothing about which rear-end is better, or when they got better. Flaming is becoming a really bad habit here. Just give your input instead of trying to put them down.

Thanks guys, and Tas, it's cool, ya don't have to get so mad
I WAS referring to the splines; I was wondering when it was increased. Though I might check out a fourth gen now, but I don't know; as long as I have little trouble installing it.

nothing bugs me more than people telling me I'm wrong when I know I'm not. Like on the Jeep boards some hick was bashing Nissan engines when they win awards every year. Stupid things like that get blown into big deals for no good reason.

You might want to check out the 4th gen rear like mentioned above. I got mine cheap, $325 shipped with disc brakes. Granted a 9-bolt may be stronger, if you're looking for 13's the 10-bolt will do OK.
I have a question about 26 vs 28 spline axles. If you have a pre 89 rear, if you were going to buy a SLP posi unit and gears, could you just put 28 spline axles in your rear and be ok? I have a friend with an 88 T/A who wants 3.42s, but he has 3.08 (I believe) gears now, which means he'll need the new carrier and I was thinkin' of giving him my axles out of my old rear, but if he has to do anything else it'd just be easier for him to buy a new rear...
Thanks
