How much Horse power would edlebrock headers & y-pipe with 3" exhaust piping with no cat free up?

I’m going to install that setup here next week when the exhaust shows up along with some 3.42s I got last week. I’m hoping to get in the 15's considering my best time stock with open element is a 16.170 any one want to take a wild guess at what my new time might be? I’m going to start doing some chip tuning as soon as I get my data logger to work

In short a lo3 with Exhaust 3.42's with chip tuning with a best time of 16.170 stock what do you think it will run?

Re: Could it break into the 15's ?
I'd say about a 15.5- 15.7 at about 90 mph or so. Maybe slightly quicker with dead on tuning and a little weight reduction. You should try some of the cheap n easy mods like the TB coolant bypass, smog pump removal, advanced timing or try and fab up a dual snorkle intake.

Re: Could it break into the 15's ?
I have yet to run my car with my 3.42's and headers, back exhaust but my totally stock run was 16.07 @ 84.4 mph. thats with 2.73 gears stock posi. and restrictive exhaust. i ran my car on the dyno yesterday and got 157hp and 233tq at the wheels.

in 92 rs with a Lo3, headers, offroad y and flowmaster catback i was doin 15.4@90 with stock 2.73 gears so you should deff be in the low to mid 15s with your set up

Re: Could it break into the 15's ?
the TB bypass is a common mod for TPI cars. coolant doesnt flow the TB on TBI cars

Re: Could it break into the 15's ?
I've got 3.23's open diff, 245/50R16's, Hedman Headers w/ 2.5" y-pipe and full mandel bent w/ deleted cat. My Personal best was 15.9292 @86.99 w/ 155K on a stock engine. I fell asleep at the tree all day, gettin used to the stage 1 clutch and I could NOT hookup in 1st.

I'm curious what it'll run but I'd guess-timate mid 15's. Any trans mods? shift kit etc? 700R4's are junk, ... but cheap & built for economy. Be gentle at first.

Re: Could it break into the 15's ?
yea it has a b&m shift kit in it, the tranny slips into third with anything less than full throttle. i will post up my new times after i get my exhaust & gears in next week. the chip tuning wont happen for awhile because of datalogger problems as soon as i find a used tbi nitrous kit that will be going in also anyone know how long a l03 might last with a 125 shot?

Re: Could it break into the 15's ?
If you aren't into 15's with a 3.42 rear and full exhaust, there are bigger problems. I would guess something like a 5 second reaction time or some such.

well at work today I had are mechanic there look at the motor he told me it was the lifter or a bent valve or I couple of other thing he said probably not worth fixing it,
anyway after work I was driving home from the body shop about a 4 mile drive and then I here a sound some what like firecrackers and popcorn going off at the same time then it died about 1 mile away from home so I called my boss and he pulled it home with the tow truck

Ok Now to get to the point

Here’s a few engines I thought about swapping in let me know what you guys think about them

How hard would it be to get my tbi system running on this motor? Or would I be better off with a carburetor setup?

Re: Could it break into the 15's ?
I would go with the 260 HP engine and install a 204/214 @ .050" duration camshaft in it. It will make about 285 HP/350 TQ with headers, an efficient exhaust system, and proper tuning on the intake side. Installed in a car with catalytic converter, etc. it will easily drop down to about 250 Net HP.

204/214* @ .050 is enough cam to pull well up to about 5,000 rpm in a mild 350, yet tame enough to tune easily and get good mileage.

Re: Could it break into the 15's ?
I would suggest checking with a local machine shop. Find out what it would cost for you to drop off a rebuildable 350 and have them go through it. You might be surprised how much money you can save.

You might also look into a reman engine from a parts store, be warned though I've heard some horror stories of engines eating them selfs in a few thousand miles. Luckily they come with warranty's so you won't be out much other than some time swaping the motor.

There are several cheaper ways to get an engine than a GM crate motor.

Re: Could it break into the 15's ?
I did low 15's with mostly bolt ons and 3.23 posi. I probably could have gotten faster but some car dumperd his motor 30min before the track closed and they shut it down. I sold the car a month later but I'd swear if I'd had a better launch I would have hit 15.00 that day. You can easily get that car into the 15's
