What engine for TBI ?
I was not sure which board to post this, but I thought I would stick with TBI. Anyway I am planning a engine swap and have spent many hours researching what I want, including posting on this board.
I talked today with the garage that does my inspections and asked them what they look for in Missouri. We have no emissions test or sniffer test as I have seen many of you call it, where I live. Only in St. louis and Kansas City. As far as the engine, they say they don't care what it looks like or what is on it. They only look at brakes, taillights, horn, headlights, ect...
Finally what engine do you guys suggest for me, while keeping the TBI unit. I have looked at the ZZ4 crate, the Fast Burn 350 crate, and a Caprice 350. The only reason I did not decide was worrying about emissions and keeping the EGR. I just want something that will work good with the TBI set-up and computer.
Oh ya, this has to run on pump gas and will be driven daily. Thanks for the help.

This depends on how much customization you want done to your block. If you just want to buy a 350 with hypereutectic pistons, the usual GM goodies, and not have to worry too much about the combonation, go with the ZZ4. If you want to buy non GM parts, and would only be selling the stuff that came stock on the crate motor, then buy a caprice block. You'll save a lot of money picking the cheapest GM block you can find, if you're going to swap everything anyways.

It all depends on what kind of performance your looking for too. If you just want something that is better than stock but has the same behavour, then go with the caprice engine. If you are looking for more performance, then a little more research is necessary. Most of the GM alum heads, if not all, do not have provisions for egr so you will have to go a different route. Either port a good set of 350tpi heads or use a set of SR Tourqer heads(or Iron eagle or any other simular head). This will keep you egr compliant. There are ways around this but it can get complicated. You will also more than likely have to burn or have burned a new chip for the ecm. Hope this helps, I'm not trying to discourage you, just letting you know what might be ahead.
