Fuel Pressure -- How much is too much?

I've been having some performance problems lately, and after discussing it with a few knowledgeable people, we decided that maybe my fuel pressure was too high.

I've got a '92 RS (see sig for mods). The adjustable fuel regulator was allowing 13 psi of fuel pressure at it's lowest setting, and we thought this may be a problem.

I swapped it out for the stock one, which brought the pressure down to 11.5 psi, and
it seems to be running better. I won't really know until I drive it for a few days though.

Is 13 psi too much fuel pressure? I have an Air/Fuel Mixture gauge in the cab, and it did lean out the mixture, but just a very little bit. It is still running on the rich side.

Thanks for any advice,

Thomas.

fuel pressure should only be adjusted as a stop gap to help keep proper air/fuel ratio if you don't have a custom chip.
therefore, any adjustment you make to the fuel pressure should be made only if the need is seen in the engine. adjusting the pressure just because you can has caused more probs for people than it has solved.
the injectors are rated to flow properly up to 13psi, and i can tell you from past mistakes that at 15psi they just shoot gas all over the place and make a big ineffective mess.

So, you're saying I should just keep it at stock; but 13 psi is still within the injector's specs.

If I got injector's from a 350's TBI unit, would I then be able to put the adjustable regulator back on and possibly up the pressure above 13 psi?

Right now I am running the custom track chip. I don't know the param's of it, but I could find out if it makes a difference?

Thanks for the info,

Thomas.

Let me see if I understand this.. If i put a fuel pressure gague inline with the supply side I dont want the pressure to be above 13 psi. I have adj fuel pressure so I adjust the pressure I should see increase in pressure and vice versa. Now is it safe to say that If i increase pressure I shall make the motor run rich and vice a versa. It seems to me that I cannot get the correct adjustment on my fuel/air meter.

you dont want your pressure to be making you run rich all the time. depending on your engine. some engines need 15 psi. stock ones. keep it around 11, tops.

WHAT?! confusing sentance. if you adjust pressure up, then you should see pressure go up. correct. is that what you were asking?

if you get your air fuel meter close enough, your computer will eventually take care of the rest. just get it as close as you can, and you mixture is going to change as you drive, you dont want 14.7:1 at wot, etc.. what are the specs of your air fuel ratio? do you know how lean you are when it reads lean? WOT a/f should be near 11.7:1 or 12 something to 1
