Black Smoke
Black Smoke
On my 88 firebird TBI I get a puff of black smoke on start up this leads me to belive that the car is running rich for a second before it figures out that it is too rich. What would cause a condition such as this? Thanks for the help.
if its just on startup, its you have bad valve guide seals. I had mine replaced last year. You don't need to have the heads pulled to do this. I need to do this on my Jeep now acutally.

I have Black smoke from unburned gas, I thought that the worn valve gide seals would cause Blue smoke from buring oil?
Is there some type of "choke" function like on a carb that enrichens the fuel mixture at startup? Or is there something in the TBI that could become gumed up enough to cause this type of condition?

One of my friends has a 88 TBI truck that was doing the same thing and he had to replace the IAC valve on the TB. Is this a common failure and would this cause the rich running? It also seems that when it black smokes the engine is trying to die(450-500 RPM)instead of going up to about 1000 then slowly comming down to idle speed like it should when you start it.
