Viruses
Viruses
I've had to clean up a lot of messes at work with viruses. I hope everyone has a quality program like Norton AntiVirus around and that is updated all the time. I had 2 other programs before this one and neither caught the viruses that Norton AntiVirus did. Tonight I ended up catchig that loveletter virus attached to a .jpg image I was looking for from Morpheus. I hope everyone is more careful with public file sharing than I was. No more mass pic gathering for me. I'll only get them from peoples websites from now on
. Good news at least is that my updated Norton AntiVirus seems to be handling everything beautifuly.
take care

update. The virus not only grabed .jpgs and .gifs, it tries to pose as an MP3 by copying the names of your MP3s and then multiplies.

I disagree that Norton's is the best. WHen u had mcafee, did u update ur dat files before u did the scan? I work for computer support for the CMU campus and we run the servers for CMU and we use Mcafee on all our users and lab computers. U just need to remember to update ur dat files and u should be fine with any anti-virus software.

As for Anti-virus software....I have Norton 2001 and it works great. I also used lots of others, they all will find the viruses but some work better at the clean up. It all depends on the virus though. Some software sucks the resources out of the machine while others don't know how to remove the virus.
The best defense is like you said, be careful. I have always found it easiest to "find" the virus name from the software. Then do a search for information and what it does. Then I clean it out by doing trick registry modifications which give you the ability to delete the virus. Never depend fully on anti-virus software.
