Either one is better than what you have now. I put a 9-bolt with 3.45's in mine and am very happy with it. I had a 3.27 ratio 9-bolt in it while mine was being rebuilt. They both were fine. 3.23 or 3.27 are more plentiful. The only problem with the 3.23 or 3.27 ratio is a lack of spedo gears (GM never offered this rear end ratio for 5 speeds). So you will have to correct for the error. Since yours has a mechanical speedo cable it is easier. Speedo boxes are available aftermarket. Just drop in the correct gears. A speedo shop can set you up and verify the speedo is correct. Good luck, Lon.

I just finished installing 3.73 with my 5-speed and let me tell you that when you floor it your eyes will open up big time. I used to have the 3.42's and broke the pinion gear and decided to go for 3.73's. The overdrive will keep your gas mileage in check on the highway and they are awesome for the street. Keep in mind that these gears are only useful if your engine makes its power in the mid to upper rpm range.

What ever you're doing...if you want speed you should tune so you cross the 1/4 mark at peak hp in either 3rd or 4th gear. That will give you the best 1/4 time 99% of the time.
So figure how fast you go in the 1/4 then figure what gear you CAN still hold and then figure out the rpm of the engine. Dada done
If I had a 5 speed I would go with the 3.73s or 4.10s just because you can! With an auto, anything more than 3.73 is overkill for the street. NJSpeeder will beg to differ but he's also running taller slicks at the track and needs the 4.10s.
