Raced this dude in a 383 TBI
So I was on my favorite racing street when some dude pulled up in a camaro. We raced and he was pretty fast. So I pulled over and popped our hoods and he had a 383 with the stock tbi bolted on top. He said he ran 104 mph at the track. Judging from how it ran I probably buy it. He had no programming and had no idea what he was talking about but the car ran well. What do you guys say to that? I thought he would have some serious leaning out issues but who knows?

Maybe he payed for the motor work... He's just the driver???
Or he has a mellow enough cam in the 383 with big enough injectors and a possible FP increase to make it run reasonably?
The low-rpm torque advantage (ie, off the line) of a 383 is tough to beat, even if it is a mellow 383.

Without tuning it aint ****. He prolly just picked up a 383 from someone else (probably built to fit under a carb) and plunked his stock tbi on it. I'd imagine he's running his stock chip, too, if he was like you described him. It'd be nice to see someone build a real beast like that though

excuse me while I clear my throat...cough~bull~cough~shi
I can't see how a 383 with even a mellow cam would run strong with a stock eprom. The only way he WOULDN'T be running lean is if he's got some major mods like a wideband o2 sensor and he needs at LEAST 350 injectors to get a 104 trap speed. Oh, maybe his car only weighs 2000lbs, then I can believe it.
I truely don't believe this is just a stock 305 TBI unit with a stock ecm/eprom on ANY 383.
I have to say, I'm glad to hear of a TBI system running strong.

He didn't sa it was a stock "305" TBI, just that it was a stock TBI... Maybe a 350 unit: w/the big injectors? worked on by a PRO, if the guy didn't know what he was doing.??? I doubt an engine builder would just slap any old TBI on his new motor without making sure it would not run ok... At leas I wouldn't. Would you? I bet it pulls clean to 5000rpm, which is plenty to win a street race in a 383 with the right gears.
Guys I must have just lucked out, cuz I have some mystery injectors. I do not know what they came out of or what they are, but my car pulls great up to 5700, and the motor just stops pulling about then. No fault of the injectors. My car did that with the beastly quadrajet carb I used to have. I have a stock throttle body, and a the 747 computer that I have burned a few chips for, but nothign serious as I do not have a scantool!!! which I need desperatly!!!

No really, I had a 305 TBI. He had a 305 car and tb top half. he asked me about getting a bigger TB. He said the car was lean at the top but still ran pretty well. Sounds like he just bolted some stuff together and it ran decent.

Toss dual 670's on top of that! If you use heads from the earlier 472 (I think) you can get some where near 12:1 compression. They are supposed to be kick *** heads too.

To glance at a TB and judge wiether it has 2" or 1.8" butterflies, takes a good eye. The injectors you can't tell.
And the chip in my car is *stock*.
104 with a TBI?.
I got 99.99 and that was it and I had alot of time tweaking mine. Cracking a 100 in a full weight car is doing something, in my book.
