What's up guys. I'm new to this forum, and also to racing! I just got interested on making my weak 92 Firebird, 305 TBI in better shape. Hope you all can help me. Ok, i'm gonna start off by putting an open air element from K & N. Is that really the best? I've heard of "Dual Snorkel Air Cleaners?" But i've also heard they are xpensive! Anyways, i've seen on some posts of taking off the a.i.r.? What's that? Does it really work? Is it the best thing to cut off my cats, run a straight pipe? Please help me out! THANX!!!!

Dual Snorkels bring more cold air into the motor but the open element sucks in way more air...just hot air. AIR is a part of your smog system(those tubes running of your exhaust manifolds thats AIR). You said you had cats? I think you mean cat. Some people love not having a cat some people dont.

You should get a cat-back soon

NH is right about the AIR being an emission system component. It pumps air into the exhaust manifold right after the exhaust port to burn any air/fuel mix that makes it through the cylinder. NH is also right about you only having one cat. You can pull the cat out and bang the guts out of it and put it back on, if you want an easy way to get rid of it. Some exhaust shops will put a test pipe in its place (illegal). If you've got access to a welder, you can cut the mounting brackets and weld 'em to a piece of pipe to make your own test pipe. If you get rid of the cat, you'll have to get rid of the AIR or your exhaust will go "pop-pop-pop" whenever you accelerate and then let off the gas.

If you wanna learn, you've come to the right place. Welcome.
