Mods for my LO3

I just bought an 89RS and would like to get some more power from it. I was thinking about getting a flowmaster 80 series catback, edelbrock TES headers, and and Edelbrock intake. But i cant find the edelbrock intake part number on there website. the only TBI intake on there is for a V6. Also why are so many people not likeing this intake, is there a better one that is a direct replacement needing no modifications to the rest of the car. also will the intake give me more performance if i had the headers and exhaust on? thanks

Nick

Welcome to the board. You're gonna love it here, because of all the people here that know these cars so well.

Most of us will tell you from experience that any type of high flow exhaust system will be a noticeable improvement in power and response.

The TBI was built for longevity, rather than performance. This dissapoints some people, but there are many TBI cars here that have in excess of 200,000 miles without a rebuild.

Eventually, someone will mention the tech articles here that are very helpful, including the Ultimate TBI articles.

200 hp is easily within your reach without costing too much time or money.

Nick, the edelbrock part#3704 costs $209 from summit. Some people say that they think you'll get more power if you use the regular carb intake and then get a tbi adapter. The problem with this is that you may need to elongate the center bolt holes when using your heads, you'll run out of stock hood clearence, and it sounds like you want a true bolt on replacement. If you want my opinion, get the headers first. I put my manifold on before I got headers, and I didn't notice any difference, except a little less off idle power. You cant put all that air and fuel into an engine and give it nowhere to go. Our cam probably doesnt rev as high as the performer manifold wants to. If you're gonna change the exhaust, also get a hi-flo cat, $85 from summit. I am not a fan of the overpriced flowbastards, but ANY performance exhaust will help more then your stock one, last time I checked, a complete dymomax system was on sale in JCWhitney for $99. If your car has under 100k miles, drop the tranny panny and at least change the fluid. If it's got over 120k, you're taking your chances and it might be a better idea to leave the old stuff in there since it's already started to eat itself up. With the trans in good shape, and a decent aftermarket chip to go with your three bolt ons, you can expect your 200hp and a high 15 1/4 mile at the track. Oh, and by the way, that setup will still give you 325 miles per tank on the highway and pass emissions.

So what your saying is that there is no direct replacement for an intake? also the exhaust shop guy told me that my car came with a highflow cat. he said that all newer cars come with a high enough flowing cat. is this true?

there you go again flashing your fancy dancy site all over again. Our cars are stocked with a 2 1/4 inch exhaust. 9.5 outta 10 people here have at least a 3 inch exhaust put on. Its just cause are cars are too low, and unless you want to pound out the drivers side floorboard and put a pipe there you have to stick with a y pipe. And 3 inches is a ample amount of airflow, but thats no good if your still using 2 1/4 headers so worry about those. If your gonna open up, then don't worry about the highflow cat cause your gonna need to get a bigger one if you wanna keep it legal.

The part # I gave you is a direct replacement, 50 state legal. You're in CA, so your car is going to have to run clean, ditch the 13 year old cat and get a new one. You shouldn't be concerned with intermediate pipe size at this point, your y-pipe is your biggest problem.

So the Y pipe is my concern. is that after the headers before the cat. does edelbrock sell one with there TES headers. if the Performer 3704 is a direct replacement, i guess ill get that after the exhaust. will headers, exhuast, and intake, be a significant increase in power? thanks

The Edelbrock Performer TBI is a fine intake replacement. Not as good as one SHOULD be, but it's damned better than the stock one. And get a cat-back first; 2.5" is fine...no L03 needs a 3", but most aftermarket exhausts are 3" anyways...but whatever.

Headers, cat-bypass pipe or high flow cat and a cat-back exhaust can free up to 35 HP...expecially on a L03.

are the dynomax headers just as good as the Edelbrock. and is the Torquer II intake as good as the performer, also does it bolt to the car with no modifications like the performer does?
