Help......Fan Aint Starting.....

I never figured out why my fan all of a sudden stopped working. I checked the fan motor, it's still good. My car's temp will start going up, and the fan won't kick in. Can anyone help me out? 92 Firebird 305 TBI. Thanx! I'm new at this!

Maybe your coolant temperature sensor is bad. How did you test the motor to know it's good? Voltage diectly to it's wire harness? Also, maybe check the fusible link on the wire that is passenger-side going to the fan motor...

If the fan motor is good it sounds like the fan switch. The switch should be on the passenger side of the block.

The fan switch is in the side of the block on the passenger side. If you unplug the wire and jump it to a ground and the fan turns on its the switch. ALl the switch does is ground out the fan when the engine gets to a certain temp.

If you have A/C turn it on while the car is running. The fan should immediately turn on. If it does, then your relay and fan motor are OK and the prob is your fan switch.

the fan switch on the pass side of the block is the liely cause. those things die eventually from the heat of the exhaust being so close. not a big deal, just unscrew the old one and replace it with a new one. i think they are like 15bucks.

My fan did the same thing, first hot day of summer when i temp climbed over 240 near 260 i realized it was a bad thing. I paid someone to fix it because it was before i started learning about my car and all. It turns out it was the fan switch.. Simple way to check is to see if it turns on when you turn your ac on. If it goes on then, its your switch.

Guys, thanx for the help! But everyone is stating that it's the fan switch only if the fan turns on when i turn on the ac. But the thing is that when i turn on the ac, the fan still doesn't turn on! Any more ideas, please post........thanx!

First check the fuses. If you are ABSOLUTELY sure your fan motor is good then replace the relay. It is against the firewall on the drivers side. You should see to black box-like-thingys with wires going to them. Its the one with the green & white striped wire going to it (on the right as you face it). I can send a pic if you need one.

Funny. My fan didn't shut off last night and killed my battery, apparently. Soon thereafter I entered a mad rage. Then I got a jump from my other car and went to work.

Time for a new fan. Just the fan motor, not a whole setup. I had to replace my fan motor last year. The darn thing barely moved. I still made it to work and back 45min drive without the fan. The trick was to keep it moving 40mph or faster. In traffic I had to take a lot of back road shortcuts but I did it and the car never got over 210 , I'm just that good and yes, it was in 90+ degree weather with 90:10 percent water too coolant .
Simple way to tell if your fan motor is dead: Use a multimeter or test lamp and check to see if the wires going to the motor (there is a weather pack connector) have 12v when the a/c is turned on. If it does, you've pin pointed the problem. If it doesn't, then you'll probably need to rewire and chase a few wires. It's really a very simple circuit with short wires all exposed! Let us know if you need more help.
