Timing Cover and Pointer
Timing Cover and Pointer
Hi all... I just purchased a cover timing cover and pointer for my 305. It's a genuine GM Performance cover and pointer.
Here's my question: When I hold the bolt-on pointer up to the cover, the pointer doesn't look to be in the same position as the pointer that was on the old timing cover which came off the engine. On the old cover, TDC seems to be almost straight up center even with the top of the cover, however the replacement seems to have TDC off at an angle (more towards the driver side) of the cover.
Which one is correct? Should I use the old cover? Is there something speical about the timing marks on the L03 engines compared to other small block chevys?
The cover I ordered was for small block chevys from '67-'90 (mine is an '89) and the pointer is for a 6 3/4" & 7" balancer.
Thanks....
Mike

Yep, stock 305 cover/balancer is different.
I replaced the one on my 305 years ago with a chrome gm unit, and ended up making a new timing mark in the balancer to make up the difference.Smog police in CA didn't like that, though. To get it smogged last time, (before installing the 350) I actually cut the timing tab off the old stock cover and JB-Welded it to the chrome cover! Looked like crap, but was hard to see anyway and nobody hassled me about it anymore.
My final opinion on this was that it wasn't worth the trouble.View of cover is mostly obscured by the water pump,if you've gotta have chrome,I think somebody makes a chrome cover that only covers the top half of the existing cover.

Does another know where I can get a bolt-on, chrome pointer for the 305's?
