334cid stroker kit?
334cid stroker kit?
I heard of this engine kit for the 305ci that
supposed to add 95-115 hp for $599.(from the website : www.enginekits.com )
But someone else said it makes a lot of torque but not much hp. What does the consensus say??

I was all set to build a 334 motor about two months ago. I decided against it because of the extensive fabricating that is involved. You have to mill away at the block to clearence the added stroke, and since every engine is different, there is no straight foward set of "instructions". The kit does not include a set of heads or a cam, which are the biggest downfall to the LO3. I have also come to this conclusion, it's only my theory, but I feel that the stock computer will "like" a mild 350 better, if it's making the same power as a tweaked 305. I am not a chip programmer but I am POSITIVE that the computer, emissions system, and relieability factors will steer towards getting a 350. Oh and by the way, I was told by an engine builder that no matter how many corners you cut, you will spend over $1000 on making a 334, so at that point, why not spend a few more weeks of gas money and slap in a 350? Just my thoughts- Randy
why is there any milling involved? it is just the same old 3.75 inch stroke into a small block. it shoudl the be the same exact kit they sell to make a 350 into a 383, just with different sized pistons and rings.
i would vote against it only because for the price of doing a stroker you could make a better 350, and the stroker is still 16cid short.

I hear u randy and I expect to spend $1000 but I would spend $2500+ on a 350 and probably not have the same hp 170 + 105=275hp
on a 305 while an L98 is only putting out 245 hp.

by milling I think he meant grinding on the block to clear the rod bolts.

Tim- yeah, grinding sounds like a more appropriate word, but either way, it is the same kit as the 383 with different pistons. I see you did the math.
Ride4me- if you pick up a Super Chevy magazine, there is at least half a dozen retailers selling 220hp GoodWrench 350's for $1200. You do some minor bolt-ons to it and you'll have your 275hp. They also have crate motors that have been slightly upgraded with your power requirements for not too much more. You can always have someone who remanufactures engines build one to your specs, that may save even more money. There is something to be said to get yourself a good "seasoned" block anyway. It's already been stressed and the tolerances will maintain their accuracy. This is why some old racers will tell you that a motor is not working up to it's potential until it's been run and then rebuilt. It also gets the de-burring treatment. -Randy

Stroking a 305 is like polishing a turd. Why waste your money? Its not the 305's lack of cubic inches that hurts it, its the small bore size. 3.73" limits the size of the valves in the heads, and also limits the amount of horsepower you can make with it. Adding more stroke to it only makes it worse. Instead of stroking it, get the "bore kit", which is a 350 block.
The $1200 350 is a non-roller 85 and earlier setup. You'd really want a 87+ roller setup. GM sells a L05 crate engine, which is a 350 TBI replacement.

anyone know if you can get that 3.80 stroke crank from the GM 383 crate engine? I'd love a 389 Firebird

Is it a size matter? 'cause a mustang 5.0
only has a 302 and seems to do pretty well.
Just a thought.

no the 5.7L would make more (aka chevy 350) than the 5.0L chevy. Sorry I typed that post REALLY fast.

that makes it easier to just spin the crap out of the motor to find more power, we don't have that luxury. the rest of the chevy architecture has proven itself to make more torque and have generally(in street and street/strip applications) a flatter torque curve.
