what kinda air intake set up r u guys using?
hey im really looking into getting an open air element for my 89 camaro. the only thing is that i dont want it getting just hot air. has any tried to use an open element air cleaner with their duct(s) still in place to add some cooler air as well?

You can also use a TPI airbox. It can be adapted to the stock aircleaner assembly. Although it can be restrictive on high output motors, on the stock L03, itll flow alot better then the stock setup. Do some searches on this board. Its been discussed a few times.

Look at this thread...https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...i+cold+air...a lot of us with 305's have done this simple swap with great success...I experienced an immediate hp increase while my motor stayed very cool...here is a pic of my '92's 305...

this is what im using right now, and it flows just as good as k&n becuase i had a open k&n before ,plus i have one of my headlights takin out ( i have my lights rigged up so that when i turn my headlights on the outside headlights turn on together and the inside ones dont work i have one blacked out one and i have one headlight takin out the one on the drivers side (second in from right). and it has a tube connect to that headlight that creates a ram air/cold air effect becuase the tube is pointed at my filter works great.

The air duct will be little more then a token ammount of air without actually being used to intake air. The engine will pull in the ambient air around it, which will come from within the engine compartment.

ProjectX, you can get the 2 piece TPI type air filter housing on E-bay for cheap if you watch and wait for the right deal. I paid $30 for the last one I bought.

it's old, but it'll give you an idea of what the stock one modified will look like.
I have mine setup like this now, it made a very large improvement to the drivability of that car, suddenly I could pull for much longer, and a bit harder. highly recommended if you're willing to fabricate it. actually, in a link on that page there's another thread that mentioned using the top of the air filter box off of a blazer because of the taller height, I'm using that too. I haven't tried it with the original one on, but...what i have works, I'll just say that.
the tpi box cost me $20 at a junk yard(the lid cost me like, $5), just make sure you grab the bottom piece too(of the tpi box, that is). I also got the one with the i.a.t. sensor at the box, and just extended the wiring of mine to fit up there, worked quite nicely, no dangling sensor.

freeloader and every one that is going to use the camaro tpi air intake,
switching to tpi ducting is a good thing because the intake on the stock tbi air box is really tiny. But u need to find a way to free the flow area between the filter and the tb bores, that means a flat base or bonnet. Only at tat point u will have a respectable result.

Re: what kinda air intake set up r u guys using?
well, I removed that ring so i could turn my air filter box towards the front of the engine bay, so essentially, it's a flat base.
but there's hardly a "non-respectable" result out of any of it, any freeing up of the stock air system can't really hurt. originally i took the plastic piece that connected to the area above the headlights off of an older thirgen that was carb(it was bigger) and simply put it in place of mine. it made a difference. nothing huge, but it made a difference.

Sorry it took me so long to get back. That is a Cadillac Bonnet from early 90's. follow the link in my first post for details. The whole setup cost less than $100. Add K & bN's and it works great.

The objective is a free flowing set up like a flat base open element that breathes cold air.
Loock at the injector wiev pic in my post I mentioned abowe, to see what flat base means for me.
ramairbox.com has good ispiring pics on how to channel the biggest amount of cold air as possible.
