i have a 91 tbi 305. block and heads were both just rebuilt. car will barerly idle, it doesn't idle smooth at all. i replaced the map, ecu, coolant sensors, cap, rotor, coil pack. i cleaned the iac and egr valve. im getting codes 23,33,34,42. i've checked all the wires and vac hoses the best i can. code 42 says bad ignition but its over a hundred bucks and i don't want to buy one if thats not the problem. any other ideas?

 

Did your problems happen immediately after you had all that work done?

 

The car ran great for the first two weeks after the rebuild. Then it went downhill slowly to this point. It fouls plugs quickly.

 

Try getting a vacuum tester. I got mine from harbor freight for about 10 bucks. Check that single tan wire that puts the est in bypass mode also. Code
42 can be set off by that being unplugged. Also, I think autozone can test your ignition module for you. I think I got an extra one if its is bad.

 

I've checked the vacuum pressure and it's good. That wire is plugged in. When I get back home I'm going to pull the ignition and take it to Advanced or AutoZone. Do you know if the pick up coil is adjustable?

 

That I dont know.

 

A valve adjustment or your adjustment backing off would cause a rough idle to worsen over time also...(also triggering codes) Have you rechecked your valve lash?

 

i havent checked the valve lash. i measured the injector resistance and got 1.2 on one and 1.3 on the other. i took it all apart and cleaned it and put it back together. i got eye leven and noticed that both injectors spray a cone, but not the same cone, one is bigger than the other. and when i open the throttle, the cones both turn into a straight stream down into the throttlebody. only at idle to they remotly spray cones. would this mean bad injectors or bad fuel pump. autozone wants 45 bucks for a fuel pressure tester. noone rents them anymore.

the ignition checked out fine
