No timing advance?

Sometimes picking up these old vehicles can make you wanna pull your hair out, ya know?
I only get to work on my 1990 GMC K1500 every other week due to my work schedule. Last week off, I ironed out some driveability issues........some didn't get sorted completely out.
One is the timing.
If I set it at 0 degrees like the specs call for, it barely idles, and pops back through the throttle body if you open the throttle too quickly.
Finally found a spot where it was driveable and idled well, but it was at 12 degrees..........
After I had finished trying to work out the initial timing, I reconnected the bypass connector and put my timing light on it to see how much advance it was getting as the engine revs increased...........NONE. It stayed at 12 degrees regardless of how high I revved the engine, or if it was idling.
Had another module laying around, put it in, no difference.
I had guys at several parts stores tell me they sell a TON of the remanufactured distributors for these vehicles, and since mine had over 200K on it, it might be wise to just go ahead and replace the whole distributor instead of chasing my tail with this one.
I can get a new GM one from Scoggin-Dickey for $169.99 plus tax, one for the RamJet 350 for less than 20 bucks more, or a reman one from O'Reilly's or AutoZone for around 100 bucks plus tax.
What do you guys think?
I'm waiting on my "new" laptop to come in, have the tuning hardware listed and ready to order from Moates, but none of that will be worth a tinkers damn if everything isn't in order.............
