Engine code help

hey guys well i finally got the baby running. got a few codes thrown at me tho. i think i did it rite. every flash is a # soo like 3 flashes equals 3? and so forth... if that is rite i have code 12,33,44,54. now i read what all mean. but i cant understand why i would get a code 54 if i dnt have a carb? any ideas guys. and if im getting these codes what needs to be changed? do you think the ECM Is bad? lemme know thanx

Re: Engine code help

Your right it's done like morse code.flashes together then a pause the flashes together.Places like Auto Zone/Advance will generally check for codes for free. And it may be best if you invest in a code reader. It's a big help to put you on the track of a problem.

Code 12 - common code that shows ECM is in diagnostic mode. You should get it at the start and end of the cycle.

Code 33 - MAP sensor voltage low/vacuum high or MAF sensor signal high/flow low

Code 44 - Oxygen sensor lean error

Code 54 - Low voltage at either fuel pump or fuel pump relay OR output failure at quad driver module.

If you get code 55 indicates an ECM problem.

I would check all your connections and grounds, especially at the ECM, then reset the ECM.Drive her then check for codes.

Re: Engine code help

well for the o2 sensor i dont have a cat so i guess thats where that code comes from

the MAP sensor i really am new to that one, dont know what to look for

the ECM, i dunno if its bad or not. and the fuel pump i just changed. the relay i just replaced. but it was shorted out and so was the coolant fan relay
i replaced both, and wired them together with a union splice. soo i dunno why it wouldnt be gettn enuff power?

Re: Engine code help

I see you got some codes: 12, 33, 44, 54. - Those are not hard to troubleshoot, but you must have a DVM and be able to measure some voltages.

1) Code 12 - when you connect Pins A & B of ALDL connector together ECM is placed into a diagnostic mode. First code 12 is flashed three times in the row followed by other codes.

2) Code 33 - This code is set when MAP sensor reports high voltage with TPS at 2% or less. GM MAP Sensor looks something like this:

http://www.robietherobot.com/storm/mapsensor.htm

Your car was originally equipped with a 1 Bar sensor it should have id # 039, 460, 883, 876 and should have either green or black contact insert (also green connectors were used to ease identification). MAP sensor do go bad, but one way to be sure is to back probe the MAP connector with DVM while engine is idling.
Pin A (Black Wire) should read 0.0 Vdc - its a ground return.
Pin B (Light Green wire) should read 1.2 to 1.8 Vdc - this a MAP signal, at idle
Pin C ( Gray wire) should read 5.0 Vdc - this is a 5 volt reference supplied by ECM.

3) Code 44 - This code will be set whenever the ECM sees a lean exhaust condition. The main causes for this is a grounded O2 sensor, low fuel pressure, restricted injectors, contaminated fuel, exhaust leaks or bad air switching valve. Operating conditions will set this code when a low O2 output voltage (less than 200 mV) exists for about a minute after the ECM enters closed loop. It has nothing to do with a removed CAT, but exhaust leaks will do it every time!

4) Code 54 - This code is set by ECM due to a missing or a low fuel pump voltage. Since you had some surgery done on your harness look for tangling tan-white wire hanging around driver side firewall or next to a oil pressure switch just above oil filter. That wire feeds back fuel pump voltage back to ECM, so that ECM know that FP is getting supply voltage.
