Computer trouble?
Hello. Got an SES light on the way to my buddys house last night and decided to put it on the scanner today. It was a 32 EGR. The guy who scanned it (neighbor who was a mechanic) tested the EGR by pushing in the diaphram and said that checked out ok. Then he hooked a vacuum gauge up to it and it didnt hold any vacuum. He didnt know if these EGR's have a bleed system, but said if they didnt the EGR is toast. (would make sense about the ping I cant get rid of). Anyways he noticed the car running rough so he put the scanner on it again and checked things out. About 3 mins into it the car started to run REALLY crappy surging and smelling like rotten eggs and the scanner would shut off. we did this over and over. same thing. Car would run really funky and the scanner would shut off. But before it shut off he noticed the O2 not working properly he said. Mentioned a "lazy" O2. Another thing that baffled him is the computer he had hooked up to it wouldnt work with the key on the "on" position like it should the car had to be running. He also Noticed that the car was in open loop while fully warm and mentioned the funky idling felt/sounded like "limp" mode. Car ran decent off the scanner which confuses the hell outta me. Sorry for the long post any info would be great.

Re: Computer trouble?
The scan tool may have been putting the ECM into one of the diagnostic modes. This will change how the engine runs.
