Do you still have the labeling under your hood? That will tell you what the base timing should be. Usually its either 6 degrees for the older cars or 0 degrees for the 90+'s, but your stickers under the hood should tell you for sure.

I'd be interested in finding out more on timing. I know what the posts say here (0 or 6). Unfortunately, I don' t have the sticker under the hood and the Chilton/Haynes say 6. I know I can play with it but thought I would ask first.
Thanks!

But TBI's are definitely set to zero degrees stock. You can bump that up to 4 or 6 degrees for a little more power, but be sure to set it back to zero before you go in for an emissions test.

LG4's and TBI's are zero degrees. 305 and 350 TPI's are six degrees. 85-92 V6's are ten degrees. I dont know what L69's are supposed to be, nor do I know 82-84 V6's.

The LO3 heads are fast burn by design and thus don't necessitate any initial advance like TPI heads do (non fast burn). A few degrees can increase throttle response but your best fuel economy and emissions will be found at 0 degrees TDC, just as the factory sticker indicates.
