tbi horsepower??

i have an L03. basically stock. shorty hooker headers & 2 1/2" y-pipe. to a 3" midpipe and possibly a 3" single in-single out 40series. might go with a hooker aerochamber. but anyways, i have a set of 081 heads and i might invest in a LT1 cam. i thought about the lt4 hot cam. but didnt know if it would work. with basic port work to the heads and intake manifold with the lt1 cam. combined with a chip possibly from tbichips. does anybody have an idea of hp. also no smog pump or catalytic converter. i also thought about the 454 throttle body. just kinda curious what hp i might be lookin at. thanks

Re: tbi horsepower??

I would do a search, I swear this topic has come up at least once a week since I started going on this forum in 2000.

It all depends on your goals and time.
Are you planning on tuning the car yourself? Do you have the time to learn how to become a good tuner?
I have seen threads where people have had very good luck with an LT1 cam swap and people that have had bad experiences with an LT1 cam swap and sold their car because of it. It all depends on how much time and money you really want to put into you L03.
When I owned my 90 RS i actually bought 081 heads, LT1 cam, and 454 TBI, ending up selling them since I didn't want to deal with the headache. Also, things like torque converters, 3.73 gears/posi, intake manifold, cheap stamped 1.6 rocker arms, timing bump, asp crank pulley put me in the mid 14s and I didn't even have to touch the heads and camshaft or do any tuning.

The one great thing about owning an L03 is it is a very easy engine to work on gives you a lot of experience working on cars, gave me the knowledge and confidence to modify my 02 Z28.

But end the end, if you have the time and patience to learn how to tune a head and cam swap should yield you some nice gains. GOOD LUCK! and I would just go with the LT1 cam, probably going to be a little easier to tune and more TBI friendly.

You will need to upgrade fueling and at that point it will be much easier and efficienter if go with a EBL then a coustom chip. EBL's fuel efficincy will quicly make up for the price difference as well. I calculated if I would have buy'd EBL instead of coustom chips, in the last 2years I could have saved up over 3000$ fuel and gotten better performance from the start.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...o3-lt1cam.html

According to the fueling my actual set up is good for 250-260hp @4400-4600rpm.

Re: tbi horsepower??

Im not sure about the power but I had a TBI 305 that I ran at the track a few times. I raced it bone stock with a 5 speed and it ran a best of 16.3. After about 2 years of about every thing that you can do to a 305 tbi just motor and 3.73 gears and a differnt ratio gear pattern in the T-5 I ran 13.9 with it. Not sure if this is what your looking for but its some kind of numbers? I never had it dyno'd.

Re: tbi horsepower??

yeah this is good info thanks. i also forgot to mention too i have just installed a set of full roller 1.6 rockers from cnc motorsports. i had the roller upside down on one and started the car to start the adjustments. well it ran fine for a couple days. i never drove it cuz i was waiting for the tall valve covers to come in. when they came in i thought it would be a good idea to run the rockers one more time before i put the covers on. well thats when i noticed a problem. it make a god awful sound. a terrible knock of some sort and the pushrod was loose. so i tightend it up, whoops! it just died and come to find out the intake valve stuck down and bent the pushrod so the car has been down for a month now. i had the set of 081 heads settin aside, that's why i started checkin around on some things such as the dif in 081 to swirls and what not. but im goin with my 081 heads since the car is tore down this far. they are gettin port matched, bowls blended, valves checked and cleaned, and he's gonna port match my stock intake manifold. he was gonna put bigger 1.6 exhaust valves in there. but i didnt have the money for that yet. maybe at the beginning of the year when i start my 327 project. i'll go a little deeper into the heads. i appreciate all the replies. the info on this site is unreal.
