You can use it. The only benefit it'll provide is a rev limiter.

If you already have one might as well just throw it in. Make sure you use the GM dual connector coil MSD harness when you install it, should make the installation a lot easier. Maybe the IROC has the MSD harness also.

Re: MSD 6AL for TBI?

Just my two cents. I installed this in my 88 Iroc w/ a set of E3 plugs. I noticed a huge difference in throttle response and power. It also fixed my tach jumjping all over the place. Then again I installed a complete MSD set up (wires, distributor, coil, msd 6al, and harness). The harness is key to the whole thing. Install was a snap with the harness. I installed the box behind the drv side headlight on the fender. However, a TGO member suggested a 93 coolant resivoir that will remove the stock coolant and a few mods to the battery box. The 93 resivoir acts as the resivoir and battery box. This is where I am going to move my msd box to (where the stock coolant tank is).

If your tach was jumping, you had a misfire. Plugs and wires alone probably would have taken care of that. You would have noticed no difference if you'd had a properly working ignition before the box.

Re: MSD 6AL for TBI?

The stock ignition system with an aftermarket coil is strong enough to fire off just about any mixture you can think of. Just make sure you have the "369" ignition module rather than the "048"

Re: MSD 6AL for TBI?

Summit sells their own (off) brand of coil that says it's a direct GM replacement. Wonder if that would help out or if you would get what you paid for.

I bought the stock mount GM blaster coil along with an MSD cap and rotor. Should give better spark then stock. Ive never heard of anyone having problems with the stock replacement MSD stuff.

048 and 369 modules

048 module pulls about 4* of timing above about 4,000 rpm while the 369 advances the timing 2* above 3,200 rpm.

I have an Accel Supercoil that I paid $5.00 for at a local junkyard from a TBI Truck/Van/SUV, I don't remember exactly what. To that junkyard a coil is a coil, a module is a module, a prom chip is a prom chip (bought various hypertech, JET, and ADS superchips for $2.00 just to read them) etc.

http://www.jegs.com/p/Accel/747628/10002/-1/10681

I am running AC Delco Rapidfires for a stock TBI 305 Van. I do have the gap bumped up to about .045" though from .035" stock. The spark from the Accel Supercoil is very hot even with the stock GM module.

One quick question if I may, where is the ignition module located in the car?

It's under the distributor cap. When you plug the two connectors into your distributor, they are plugging into that module. That's where you'll locate it.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, that was what I needed to know. One more thing, I assume that when I get an MSD Pro-Billet Ready-to-Run distributor that I won't need to worry about the ignition module because the MSD distributor will have one already correct?

Re: MSD 6AL for TBI?

That is correct. The MSD "drop in" pro billet will come with a module (I believe it's MSD's own version). I have that exact MSD distributor in my 1992 Camaro and it has worked great on track and up to about 7,000 rpm (that's all the faster I've spun this engine). I like mine.

Thanks, thats good to know. Now I have one less thing to worry about when I get my MSD Chevy Crate Engine ignition system.

what are the applications for these ignition modules? can i assume that the 048 module is for full size trucks? is this the same module that supposedly has a built in rev limiter?

I never have looked at the module from a fullsize truck. The 048 came in some TBI F-bodies and B-bodies. I have seen a 454 RV that had the 048 in it. I know the 369 came in the 1990-1995 G20 Fullsize Vans with the L03 and L05 though. I also know the 369 came in the CPI 4.3 V6 S10s and M-vans. I don't know of a stock GM module that has a rev-limiter, but the high rpm retard will certainly make the engine fall over.
