Fuel Injector cleaning? TBI
Fuel Injector cleaning? TBI
Probably a question posted many times, but
I couldn't find it ...
Any product poured into the gas tank clean the
injectors on a TBI or is that wishful thinking.
Or... remove them and use a solvent of some sort?

Re: Fuel Injector cleaning? TBI
I have two injectors in my 1989 Camaro 305 FI Vin E (TBI).
I removed mine and placed the lower part in carburetor cleaner then cycled them (fired them) using 6 volts many times. Then I held six volts on them and flushed them in reverse (back flushed them). Then cycled them again for a while in the carburetor cleaner. It definitely seemed to improve the flow through them. My engine was unused for 1.5 years (parked in the garage with the battery removed).
There are companies that will service them (clean, fire, measure output, replace parts, etc.) for reasonable cost.
Be careful replacing them since the O rings must remain pristine (perfect) otherwise you will have fuel under pressure forced past the O rings (excess fuel). It may help to lubricate the O rings with a light coat of motor oil before reinstalling them.

You can try the easy method first. Use Marvel Mystery Oil in your fuel tank and see if that clears things up. I maintained a small fleet of FedEx trucks and anytime they started running rough I added some Marvel. I was skeptical at first, thinking it was snake oil, but it really does work and saved me alot of time and money over the years.
Failing that, option two is to send them out for a cleaning. Following is a cut and paste from another forum I posted back in June.
I highly recommend this shop for fuel injector service. I sent two bbc tbi injectors I purchased on Ebay to be checked. They were sonic cleaned, flow checked, and returned to me with a complete tbi gasket set, as well as a "before and after" test report on each injector. Very quick turnaround time. Return postage was included in the $46.95 price. Contact Tim at www.cleaninjectors.com
