hooking up external AFPR, need help with plumbing

hooking up external AFPR, need help with plumbing

Hi guys,

i purchased one of these Aeromotive 13301 VAFPR units lately and i need to figure out which plumbing parts i need to hook this thing up to my L03. Problem is, i was talking to a guy at a local shop that does plumbing and such and he had never heard of the -AN style fittings, so i guess i would need to source the parts from somewhere in the US.

i also need to figure out, do i actually need to convert to braided steel lines? what would you guys guess, how much psi can the stock lines handle? which alternatives do i have concerning the lines and fittings, or what can i use to connect stock lines and the TB to the afpr's 3/8 npts?

he even lists some part numbers, but i cant figure out what line diameter i would need, also not sure about tools for crimping etc..

i dont know a whole lot about this kind of things, so far i only used them in pre-assembled packages, like coolant and oil lines on my turbododge (and yes it was leaking badly the first time i did that)

After bulding many feet of braided AN hoses I would recommend using the pushlock type of hose that summit or jegs sells made by aeroquip or russel. The pushlock stuff is lighter and easier. My Camaro is all stainless braided, even -16AN radiator hoses, and after doing that I will try to never use braided again. At work we use a type of pushlock hose for air lines and it works great, rated to 300psi I believe.

Although for a stock application I think that 3/8" hose (-6AN) would be adequate.
The stock lines should handle what ever your stock pump can put out with no problem. Just use the same fittings he did to adapt it to the hard lines.

sounds good, thanks! i was going to use -6 AN as i read this is 3/8", same diameter as the ports on my aeromotive afpr will be. do i need some kind of special tooling for the whole AN story or will i just use my metric wrenches and be done?

ok so you are saying there is no need for me to go for braided steel hoses right? yeah, the socketless one you posted seems good enough!
oh in case i didn't mention this, i will be upgrading my pump so i guess i will get about 50 psi or so, that's where my concern about the stock lines came from any upgrades necessary?

btw do you think i could just sand these fittings a bit and spray them black? i absolutely HATE this blinky and colorful style of these, that's why i was planning to go with the aeromotive ones because they are already black

I used push fit AeroQuip "elastomer" line and the same with their pushfit fittings. I was fortunate to have a major distributor of AeroQ near my home so I just took the TBI unit to them and they knew what I needed. Summit sells all. I recall the GM TBI inlet-outlet uses pipe NPT. the rest were -6AN. also where I cut the hard GM fuel line, AeroQ sells a compression fitting adapter to NPT I recall. No hose clamps for me !

I switched to an external AFPR over the summer when I did an engine swap. It turned out to be a piece of cake. If you get the correct fittings (o-ring power steering style to -6AN), you can hook up to the fitting that go into the injector pod as well as the fittings that are on the end of the rubber hose in the engine bay. If I remember correctly, there are two different sizes of the p.s. style fittings. The supply and return are different. I bought all of the fitting and hose from Earls Indy, so anywhere that carries Earls brand fitting should have them (Summitt, Jegs, ect). I mounted the regulator where the cruise control and carbon canister used to be. I also used the push-lock hose and have been quite pleased. When I bought the hose, the salesman told me to heat the hose just a little before I slid it onto the fitting and to not stop pushing until it was all of the way on.
