overheating unless interior fan is on

unless i have the air or heat on the temp starts creepin up what can be causin this?

your fan switch could have gone out, i had that problem with my car

yeah, the fan is prolly not cutting on by itself. when you turn the air on it's turning the fan on too. when you turn it off, so does the fan. check the fan temp. switch.

where is the fan switch located?

fan switch is located on the passenger cylinder head between the last 2 cylinders.

how can i tell if it is bad short of letting it heat up to 240* to see if it turns on? i know ive seen switches claiming it turns the fans on at 180* do these work? any reccomendations, part numbers greatly appreciated

You can disconnect the connection from the switch and then short out the connection. If the fan comes on when you short the connection then the switch is bad. I'm running a 180* thermostat and a fan switch from an 87 Buick Grand National which goes on at 220 and off at 204. Napa part number ECHFS113.
