Idea for more air?
I was looking at d00012's open air air cleaner thread, and got an idea. On the later year cars there's not a lot of room for one of those rare-old dual snorkel air cleaners, but right behind the air cleaner there seems to be some room, SO!
I got the idea, what if you took a cowl induction hood, and did some custom work to channel all that air straight into the back of the stock air cleaner, and you could have this, in addition to the stock snorkel.
Would this possibly work? Here's a paint I did to illustrate my idea. Black is the where the stock snorkel would be, and red is where you would try and draw in the air from the cowl hood.

Wow...I'm being referenced in another thread...sweeet.
It would work since the cowl does suck in air, but after you are over a certain speed (30mph+?). You will still have some restriction due to the smaller size of the snorkel opening. But to do it for cheap, like my setup, it should fulfill it's needs nicely. I will eventually get a better setup (x-stream top/cowl hood sealed). The more cold air the better. Go for it, and if you can, dyno it before and after!

Re: Idea for more air?
In your pic you have opened the air cleaner all around it looks like - after opening it, there's be no need for the air duct at all (black part) - you'll be sucking in way more warm underhood air than that little air duct would ever be able to compensate for. If you kept it closed all around, then there might be a point to it.
If interested, on a 1990 TBI car I had, I took an extra air cleaner assembly and made a second duct just like the first, that went to the pass side and to a plastic inlet just like the first one - basically made my own dual snorkel for the $5 cost of an air cleaner assembly from the JY, $5 of plastic flexible ducting, and some rivets and 10 minutes of time. I really didn't notice any improvement at all.
The only seat of the pants improvement I ever got from my LO3 was swapping rear gears from 2.73 peg leg to 3.08 posi. So don't spend alot of time and or cash trying to feed an LO3 more air - the intake, heads, and exhaust are so restrictive it's not worth the effort. Put that cash aside for 350!

Re: Idea for more air?
The back of my air cleaner is actually still there, I figured there was more hot ambient air back there and since the air temp sensor is back there, it won't have direct hot air blowing on it (might relocate it to colder spot in bay). But you're right, he will need to keep it uncut and plumb it that way.
I believe he was just using my picture/post as a reference to customizing our stock air cleaners.
I'm with you though, that hot air really does not help. My car runs good, I feel a big difference over the stock, but once it gets hot, it slows down a bit. I guess it helps more that mine isn't a 305
. Just wasn't enough air for the larger cubes.
