wired noise when starting

Ok, so I just bought a 92 rs 305 tbi and when I put the key in and try to start it right away, it makes this noise like if the starter was grinding. however, if i turn the key to run then turn it back down to the lock position, two times (kinda like priming the system) it will fire up with no problem. what could cause this grind-like noise? fuel pump?

Re: wired noise when starting

Sounds similar to the problem I'm having, and I'm suspecting a bad starter motor. Mine makes the grinding noise for a few seconds immediately after starting the engine. As if the starter motor remains engaged on the flywheel, even after the engine has started.

A fuel pump ceratinly shouldnt sound anything like a grinding starter. The fuel pump should run whenever you first turn the key on. If the noise you hear were the fuel pump, you would hear it then. I suspect you have starter issues. The pattern that youre seeing is probably a fluke. It is possible though that you have a faulty ignition switch and that you are not getting full starter engagement unless you cycle the key a few times. You might look for that.

gta90, I suspect that you have a starter drive issue. If the starter had been recently installed, I would say to check clearances and possibly add shims. If the starter has been in for some time, you most likely need to either replace the starter drive gear/clutch assy, or just replace the starter complete. Dont wait too long or youll be needing a flexplate as well.

When I turn the switch the starter sometimes makes this click noise and doesnt turn, I have to do it couple of times before it turns the crank

Re: wired noise when starting

This is looking like a better thread for Tech/General Engine or Electronics, but Ill do what I can for you. The clicking and not cranking is generally caused by insufficient power supply to the starter. It can be a weak battery, poor connection somewhere in the battery cables, or a bad battery cable. It can also be caused by a faulty starter motor though thats less common. Check your battery terminals and both cables where they connect to the starter and engine block respectively. Have your battery and starter tested. To test the cables themselves you need a voltmeter to perform a volt drop test across each cable.

Re: wired noise when starting

Thanks for the info. Mine also clicked when id try to start sometimes. Never had the starter motor replaced to my knowledge. Any idea how much a new starter motor costs vs replacing starter drive gear assy?

Re: wired noise when starting

In today's reman parts market, its generally more sensible to replace the starter assy as a unit. A good starter drive will cost $15-20 and requires disassembly of the starter. If youre not familiar with D&R of the starter, it can turn into a pita. When dealing with an intermittent no crank, its best to start by checking/testing the battery and cables.
