TBI won't start
TBI won't start
I'm working on my son's 89 Chevy 1500 2wd 5.7 TBI. When this problem started it would start and idle just fine while warming it up (10-15 minutes) but he would drive it about 2 blocks and it would die and not restart. If I pour gas in the TB it would start but then die quickly. I could not feel any fuel coming out of the injectors so I fugured it was the fuel pump we replaced the fuel pump but the truck still would not start. We have fuel flow and good presure. I took the ignition module out to have it tested and it tested good. When I took the module out it did not have Dialectric grease on it so I put some on when I re-installed it. After re-installing the same module the the truck started and ran fine for 1 day. The next day it would not start at all. I checked the injectors with a noid light and I have no signal but I do have ground when the key is on Injector fuse is good as are all fuses in the fuse panel. I am stumped on this one and getting frustrated so any help will e greatly appreciated.

I took the module out again and had it tested and it tested fine again but I bit the bullet and put a new ignition module in it anyway and it fired right up and is running fine today. I will let you guys know if it dies tomorrow.

It sounds like the module. And you gotta put dielectric grease on it. Helps keep it cool. I ran a module for 2 blocks without grease and missing 1 bolt. (dropped it as i was broke down on side of road) 2 blocks from home. It ended up getting a blister on it that fast. I bet your problem is solved.
Re: TBI won't start
I had this truck for 10 or 12 years before I gave it to my son who has driven it for a couple years now. the module has never been out in all of that time so it lasted a long time without the grease. I am also somewhat ashamed to admit that the oil has never been changed in all that time either. I found this a couple days ago when I attempted to fix an oil leak that it has always had since I owned it. It was leaking from the oil filter the filter was a Hastings oil filter and I ONLY use Fram oil filters. Thank you for the reply I hope it is fixed.

Re: TBI won't start
It probably is . When ignition modules start failing they often work when cold, but fail as they heat up. If they had tested it a few times it probably would have started to fail. Have fun!
Re: TBI won't start
I think this one was doing just the opposite. I think it worked when it was hot/warm but not when it was cold. When they tested it the first time they did it 3 times Which made it a little warm. I think that's why it worked when I re-installed it but once it got cold sitting over night it stopped working.
