Advancing timing

Hey guys, i tried to advance my timing but i got a curve ball while i was so i left it be. When i look at the timing mark with the electronic timing sensor connected it appears back like far back retarded. When i unplug it and point the gun it looks like its at about 4-6 degrees ironically. So does that mean the car is 4-6 degrees advanced because when the sensor is unplugged its appearing that way. My car is sluggish compared to his and were both bone stock and had recent tune ups.

I gather there was supposed to be some mention of another vehicle with which to compare, but was omitted by you?

You adjust your timing with the electronic wire detached

May we also assume that you have a tank full of premium before you start messing with the timing?

And, what type of gain do you expect?

Im not sure what to expect, im realest though, changing timing wont shave 12 seconds off my quarter mile, worst case I can bump it back down. With the wire detached it looks like im at around 4-6* advanced (past the deepest valley on the driver side of the timing mark) so that would mean its already been done.

Re: Advancing timing

4-6* past the deepest valley towards the driver's side would be 4-6* RETARDED from top dead center (ATDC).

You want it on the OTHER side of the deepest V. To the PASSENGER side (to the LEFT as you face it from the front of the car). That would be the ADVANCED side of the timing tab.

If this is actually the case on your car you're in for a NICE bump in torque once you get it set properly.

I did it last night, after i got a distributor wrench, there is a little more oomph down low, its noticeable actually.
