If the oil pump shaft is not engaged into the distr., there would be a gap at the base.
If you are sure you have the distr. in right, then you may have to turn it slightly left or right to get it started. Then you have to check the timing w/ a timing light, don't forget to unhook the timing connector. Follow the emissions label for the loction of it.

How big will the gap be its hard for me to see if its sitting flush with the manifold. But i thought that if it wasnt sitting in there correctly that the dis its self would spin or move a tad.

sounds like you have it 180* out if it is bacfiring or puffing out of the tbi.

remove number 1 plug. turn engine over with your finger in the hole till you feel compression. bring the piston all the way up. that will be close enough to tdc. see where the rotor is facing against where number 1 is on the cap. line them up. that should get it running till you can set the timing correctly.

the base of the distributor should set flat on the intake.

I got it.Thank you!Im glad i did redid the timing because its running better then ever, the rotor itself looks like it has a good share of arcing on it probably because the timing was alittle off before i touched it.But what a nightmare of a job i got into the heater core hose snapped off inside the intake manifold and had to rig up a hose for that.
