Acceleration lag... And 88 firebird for $300?
1989 camaro 5.0 tbi felt as if it had a lag when speed hit 45mph. It felt like it was hesitating to go over that. A friend of mine who saw the car today said that the engine itself sOunds good but that my rear end was that of a v6. He said that if it had drums as apposed to disk brakes and my motor was causing it to spin faster than it should. He said that to fix this I would have to get a different rear end. If not the rear end could blow. I wanted to se if anybody on here knows if this is true. He also offered me a 88 firebird with posi, and a 350 for $300. Should I take it? My rear end does have drums not disk brakes.
Re: Acceleration lag... And 88 firebird for $300?
Most v6s had 3.23s, most tbi 305s had 2.73s. So it would be an improvment to have a v6 rear end. But thats just speculating. Is he selling a whole car or just a rear end? If its the whole car then its a steal at 300 bucks.
I'd start by checking the tune up parts, fuel pressure, engine codes, clogged cat, compression test, & ignition timing.

I thought it was the timing. I even wanted to buy the four gears set up in place of the timing chain. Maybe I'll make a video when I drive it again. But you feel it more than hear the problem

Re: Acceleration lag... And 88 firebird for $300?
A friend of mine told me my problem was that my v8 305 is putting out to much output to my rear end. I told him that my problem was that when I accelerate to about 45mph andspeed up my car hesitates, lags. I feel as if the car lacks power, like it's pulling back as i step on the gas. It only happens at about 45 mph or over. I also gelt it as 60 mph. My friend told me that it was the rear end being a v6 rear end, not posi. He also said that it happened to someone he knew and he ended up blowing the rear end.

Don't listen to your friend, he has no idea what he's talking about.
You need to start with a thorough tune up, fuel filter, air filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil+filter, ect... then you should check to see where your base timing is at, base timing, IIRC, should be set to 0* and can be advanced to up to 8*.
TBI 305's aren't speed demons, they've got a decent low end, but they're really just truck motors.

Yea I thought as much. I've already changed the plug wires, plugs set to.35 or whatever the gap is. I changed the distributer, cap, and rotor. Also changed the fuel filter. Only thing I haven't messed with is the actual timing chain. I was originally thinking about just changing the timing chain to this four gear set up I saw. But don't know what brand to get. Any ideas?

I took the motor apart and cleaned it. Changed the oil pump, heads, gaskets, sensors.

Do what ericjon said.......a good tuneup might clear up a lot of the problems, next step would be to check your fuel pressure, make sure all your vacuum lines and such are in good shape.
Oh, and send the '88 Firebird to me.......I wouldn't need a title for what I'd do with it.....
