Choke won't close
Choke won't close
My daughter was given a 1992 Camaro RS for her 16th birthday. I know almost nothing about engines but I am trying to figure out a problem. I think the choke wont close on her car. When I remove the breather gas is just pouring into the carb? There is a loud hissing noise like as if there is a vacuum leak. I have checked all the vacuum hoses and I think the noise is the gas pouring in. The car idles at about 1700 rpm and of course is just blowing through fuel like water. Replaced IAC. All connections seem fine. Can anyone help. Or do I have to take it to a mechanic. Money is tight and that would have to be a last resort. I do not know if parts are original or not. Can't tell you what the parts are either. I am pretty good with my hands and am not afraid to get dirty. I do know that the O2 sensor is not attached to the car. Am trying to find someone to weld receptacle on car so I can reattach but have been driving the car for a year without O2. This other problem just started out of the blue. Nothing was done to the car immediately before this problem started. Please Help if you can!

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
From the factory, a '92 RS wouldn't have a carburetor. They had what was called "throttle body injection", or TBI. It looks somewhat like a carburetor, but is completely different, operated by a computer called the "engine control module".
The O2 sensor is vital to proper control. Without it, the computer goes into "limp home mode" and will run rich.
Since this is a TBI issue rather than a carburetor issue, I'll move this thread to the TBI forum.

Re: Choke won't close
Car is fixed. Rebuilt the throttle body. Gasket were crap. IAC was not adjusted properly. It was not far enough into the TBI. That was what was causing the loud sucking noise. Thanks for your help. I learned alot today. Didn't even know what a throttle body was yesterday.
Re: Choke won't close
Gm cars with tbi systems are some of the best to learn on, basic yet it helps you understand how efi sensors work. Infact, many sensors are tested the same way for tbi & mpi (i.e. one injector per cyl).
