How does the breather filter clip attach to the hose/filter?

How does the breather filter clip attach to the hose/filter?
This is embarassing, but I can't seem to get the breather hose clip on in any direction. I took it off about a year ago and can't remember how it's supposed to go on.
From pictures and videos I have found, it looks like you put it in between the hose and the outside of the air cleaner. The lips/curve face away from the air cleaner (weird because you would think it would follow the same curve as the air cleaner). Doesn't seem to matter which direction the opening of the C faces. I attached a picture I found.
Can anyone with a stock 305 TBI (or who knows them) tell me how it goes on?

It attaches to the white plastic filter housing on the outside of the air cleaner. It does follow the curvature of the air cleaner and fits on one of the ribs on the plastic to keep it snug.

Yeah I just bought a new filter since I needed one anyway. If you search "Dorman breather clip," they have some online, but I'm not sure which one exactly would fit. Plus if you add in shipping, you might as well just buy a new filter.
Thanks everyone, but especially you for this diagram. This whole time I was trying to put it on the square just a little bit past that ridge, right up next to the air cleaner. It went on like a glove when I put it on that ridge. Fits nice and snug now. Thanks!
