L03 Stalls in gear...Most of the time.

Hi there, after months waiting to have money and time to assemble my engine, I finally installed new pushrods on my engine (You can read about my stupidity and how it caused me to dissasemble my engine in the following link https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...oke-after.html).

Anyway, I really need your help guys, I have had this car since February 1st and havenīt been able to drive it yet!

After assembling back the engine and setting my valves(stock L03 with 109k miles), it just kept dying on me, at first I thought it was a vacuum leak but have found none, after messing with it I took a look at the distributor pickup coil and it was very rusty so I changed it for a spare distributor I had lying around, the car now maintains idle in park but stalls almost all times when put in gear. I cleaned the IAC and tried setting minimum air as per the instructions elsewhere on this site but still stalls most of the time, the only way I can keep it from stalling is keeping the Idle at about 1100-1200 rpms which in gear goes down to about 750-800 rpm, and still, sometimes it stalls.

Could a bad TPS be causing this? Spark plugs maybe? Fuel Pump is almost new and tested great when I took it to Autozone. Spark plugs were new too but after the oil incident(read link above) I had to clean them because they were soaked in engine oil.

Iīm lost here, I want to be able to drive my Firebird, but just donīt know what to do next.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Re: L03 Stalls in gear...Most of the time.

You need to go through basic checks first.

1) Since you have swapped dizy you need to verify that base timing is set correctly - LO3 is 0 deg with EST plug open. If you try to set timing with EST plug connected you'll retard base timing too far and engine will be hard press to idle.

2) Before running TPS check can perform a simple SES check just make sure that ECM does not have any stored faults.

3)TPS can be checked with DVM. You can remove TPS from TB and unhook harness plug and measure between pins A & B or B & C - set DVM to read Ohms (10 k scale or auto range). There should be a smooth change in resistance values as you move throttle shaft slot. Since you have '91 you have a semi circular style plug TPS which is difficult to probe. Get a pig tail JY or from parts store - Pico 5643PT (summit).
