Stock ignition timing with the Renegade?

Just thought I'd throw the question out there to anyone who has installed the Renegade manifold on there engine. Do you use the stock ignition timing setting of 6 degrees? I have some issues with the way mine is running and I think the problem I'm having is due to a lack of timing. Have any of you advanced the timing?

I'm interested in hearing what base timing you guys are running.

Thanks

Typical small block Chevy base timing is 8 to 12 degrees, right? Why would would base timing on a CrossFire be 6 degrees?

Re: Stock ignition timing with the Renegade?

Because the timing is handled by the computer. The 6* initial is in case the HEI module goes bad and runs in fail safe mode. Otherwise, the ECM knows the engine is set with 6* of initial and it cancels that initial advice out in its timing calcs.

Re: Stock ignition timing with the Renegade?

Mine seems to run fine on slightly more timing. I think I am running 8 degrees advanced IIRC.

Are you running the Renegade manifold?

I'm having problems with mine at low to mid range rpm, where it stumbles and falls on it's face and just feels down on power.

Yes - I am running the Renegade. How is your fuel system? That problem can be related to low fuel pressure as well. Is it doing it when the engine is under load?

Yes, it's doing it under load. My fuel pressure is about 12-13 pounds.

Maybe I should tell you what other things I've done. I ported the stock cylinder heads and did a light porting on the Renegade manifold. I also installed 1.6 rocker arms and replaced the valve springs and pushrods. I still have the stock cam.

Re: Stock ignition timing with the Renegade?

Are you still running the stock fuel pump? I wonder if you are maintaining that pressure under load. The stock fuel system should be sufficient for what you have, but you may want to upgrade your fuel pump if you still have a stock or a stock replacement. A TPI pump will give you the extra pressure you need.
Try bumping the timing up as well and see if it runs any better. I just kept playing around with timing and fuel pressure until I got it where I wanted it. The Crossfire system is far from perfect and I still get a little stumble every now and then but it runs a lot better then it did with the stock manifold and fuel pump.
