Hi, acquired an 84 Firebird, 305 last year and the engine has died. Going down the route of swapping a 350. Reading through the forums I came across information that some Canadian cars did not come with a computer. To be sure I took apart the passenger side compartment area and looked but did not find computer. I have taken a few pics of the engine and passenger side area. Where do you guys think this computer or ecm is?
The computer/ECU is relatively large, on a large bracket, with many wires going to it, but tucked up underneath the pass side dash. You shouldn't have to do anything other than remove the bottom cover if it even had one. You may have to lay upside down to look up there. There would also be a harness going from there to the inner pass fender and then up and over behind the strut tower in the engine compartment.
Your carburetor doesn't look like it's computer controlled and I'm not sure what if anything was there before the computer controlled carb.
That looks like a non-CCC Q-jet to me. Note the lack of a mixture solenoid. I also don't see a map sensor on the firewall. I think it's a redundant at this stage, but check under your distributor cap, if there's weights and springs it's definitely NOT computer controlled. Not uncommon for Canadian cars to have non-CCC Q-jets and mechanical distributors right up until the late 80s.
