TBI/TPI Hybrid Intake

Ta da! Spent $6 dollars in parts and material. I had the turbo carb top hat from a 12a turbo rotary project already. Gonna take the BOV off that and make a plate to mount the intake temp sensor on the top hat.* I haven't driven down the road yet, but worse case scenario I pull it back off and put the open element back on.

Re: TBI/TPI Hybrid Intake

To be clear the car is a tbi 305, the top hat is to turbo a carbed car, but it fits well.

Re: TBI/TPI Hybrid Intake

Blow off valve removed, air intake temp sensor mounted in place, no noticeable difference in power at any point in the power band, but the motor and exhaust have a different tone to it. No more open element whistle which kinda bugged me anyhow, and the exhaust has a deeper tone I think but that might be in my head. Once I get the flaky red paint off and paint the top hat and valve covers matching, (wife wants dark purple) I think it will look pretty good. I'm happy with the results. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone that does not have the top hat already, as the cost to get everything from scratch does not make sense for the results. Unless you just really like the look.

Where are you hiding the air filter? Is the filter(s) under the snorkel by the radiator???

I'll get a pic tomorrow, it's dark now but the filters, there's 2 smaller square filters, are on either side of the tpi air box.

Re: TBI/TPI Hybrid Intake

The air box is the stock filter box from a tpi car. It's drawing cold air from before the radiator instead of hot air through an open element. I'm not sure that I feel a difference in power or if it's in my head but I would say that the power band feels smoother I guess I'd call it.

It does idle smoother in both park and in gear. And the tone is not just in my head. A few friends and family have asked what I did to make the exhaust sound different.

Re: TBI/TPI Hybrid Intake

I like it a lot.

Also the TPI cars that have that stock have plastic pieces under the filters almost creating a box to trap the air under them. Its just like two side pieces.
Look in the front grill of one at the wrecking yard and you will see it.

Should swap over to yours no problem.
