1992 RS Doesn't want to start :-(

First off, I think my problem is fuel related. No more than 10,000 miles ago I replaced my fuel pump and fuel filter. Some schmuck decided to put sugar in my gas tank, it clogged my filter on the pump and also the inline filter. I dropped the tank, which had to be one of the worst things I have done to this car (and I have done a lot), and since my car is a 1992 it has a plastic baffle that the pump sits in. My baffle was broken so I had to cut it up inside the tank because it was to big to come out the hole for the fuel pump which is also the only hole it could possible come out. I just installed my new pump without that baffle, because I had no choice, how could I possibly get a new baffle in, if I had to cut up the old one to get it out. I also replaced the fuel filter. The car ran just great after that, except for 2 things that weren't there before. First was when I turn the key to the run position I could hear that pump, had to be 3 times louder than before, becasue it wasn't sitting in that plastice baffle. The other thing was that now if I had less than 1/4 of gas and hit a hard turn, they engine would lose fuel and not pick back up until I was straight again. With all that said here is my new problem.

My car shut down on me 3 times before this last and final one which thank *** was in my driveway. This all happened in a few hundred miles. I will be driving and all of a sudden I will come to a light or stop and the rpm's just keep getting lower and lower until the car just dies. I try to restart and it turns over fine but won't restart. Now here is the weird part because it worked the other 3 times before this last no start. I open the hood and just start touching every connctor I can get my hand on and then try and start it, and it worked, the car started. All of the connectors were in good and I don't believe any were loose. So now when I try and start the car I don't hear that loud fuel pump, but since just messing with connectors before I am thinking maybe its just the relay. I sure hope it is because I don't feel like doing a fuel pump in the middle of winter. So, Where is the fuel pump relay??? What do you guys think??

By the way I cleaned out the gas tank so there wasn't any sugar left to mess anything up.

disconnect the fuel lines off the back of the TBI and have someone try to start it...if you have fuel shoot everywhere thats probably not the problem...did you replace the fuel pressure reg or did you clean the injectors after the sugar incident? id check those...maybe one of the two just now got to the pont that it got really stopped up...if you have spark it definetly sounds like a fuel problem and putting a fuel pump in the tank really sucks doesnt it...did it a few months ago...everything worked out fine tho cept my floater is a little outta sync...i know when i need gas because ill hit a turn like you said an itll try to die till i get straight again..good luck man....also make sure your starter is cranking good.

I am pretty sure that all of the material got stopped either by the pump filter or the inline filter. I didn't clean the injectors but between the times the car was just shutting off, I did observe the fuel spray and it looked good from both injectors.

My main concern is that I don't hear that fuel pump when I turn the key on, so I would really like to know where the fuel pump relay is and see if that could be the reason the fuel pump is not coming on. Anyone else care to shed some light on my dilema.

If you keep running the tank out of gas (pump is spinning up) you'll kill the fuel pump. This is probably what happened. You might have to replace the pump again, and this time put in a new tank. I got my tank for $30.

Yeah I know that the pump running without the fuel can burn it up and that may be what is wrong, but I want to check the relay first before I go and start taking down the tank.

So, does anybody know where the fuel pump relay is located on a 1992 RS 305 TBI.

Thanks

I can't help you with your starting problems but I can give you a little advice..... buy a locking gas cap! You can get them at like Wal-Mart. When I bought my RS, that was the first thing I did. Sugar in the tank is bad, your lucky it didn't really screw something up. I live around a bunch of jealous little teenie-boppers who are still getting rides from mommy, best $7 I ever spent on my car.
