Sending unit harness codes

I have an 89 RS, 305 TBI. I am going through the process of getting it on the road again and am replacing the sending unit and the fuel pump. The code on my harness is FPG, but I can not seem to find anything that matches it, other than a $400 unit. The ones I find on ebay and other sites will say they fit my car, but don't specify the harness code or they do specify and my code is not listed. How important is it that they match. I am assuming the codes are primarily for the fuel gauge, but what is the difference? Can I just splice my harness with the new one if need be>

Are you talking about the harness IN THE TANK?

There's typically four wires. Power and ground for the guage, power and ground for the pump. The universal harnesses tend to be extra-long so they fit "everything".

The last ones I bought came from NAPA, about $25. (Weren't purchased for a Camaro, though)

Re: Sending unit harness codes

My car is code FPG as well. From what I've read any sending unit from an injected 85-92 car should be interchangeable. **DON'T QUOTE ME ON THAT THO** I'll be finding out in a few weeks when we replace the tank and sending unit. I went with a Spectra FG20A

Does anybody else have any info on the subject. There really doesn't seem to be much on code FPG out there.

Re: Sending unit harness codes

Confirmed. The Spectra piece worked with my car FPG harness code.
