Long story short my brother has been working on some of my moms properties and houses and has alot of carpentry work. I stumbled across an 80s G-van 4 houses down from hers that had As Is $500 written on the back. Turned out it was an 87 with a TBI small block and TH400. The TBI small block turned out to be a 305. Only has 104K on it. It will soon get some abuse to make it run better. I managed to wake it up from its 2 year slumber in about 30 minutes and drive it to the shop. Despite having a 3.08 G80 rear it still managed to smoke the tires a couple of times on the way to the shop. I discovered it had a nasty tip-in knock when warm. Thanks to the base timing being set at 22° BTDC. I backed it down to 6°. Ran MUCH better.

Welcome back! I remember your name from years back. Sounds like you grabbed good deal, any plans for this one?

Well my plan was to stay TBI with this one. We noticed some fluid leaks and decided to pickup a MTC1 cam. We were going to throw the set of Thorleys that I had on my old 1983 G20 up until I started the 8.1 swap on it. We stripped the front end apart this morning to pull the 305 and TH400 out of it to reseal them and put the cam in. Well this evening we could not help but notice my $350 LQ4 and my brothers $200 4L80E that has been sitting in my shop for 2 years taking up space. As of this evening the 305/TH400 is almost ready to hook the engine hoist to and pull out. I found a a pair of Transdapt LS swap engine adapter mount brackets laying on the shelf and noticed that if installed backwards on the block and mated to a set of V8 Astro conversion mounts I had sitting on my toolbox I can set the engine back about 1" and takeup the difference in length between the 9" tail TH400 and the 4L80E while making room to allow the stock LS low mount compressor to hopefully squeeze into place.

The 305 will live on though. It is still getting cammed but going into a 1980 Camaro.

Might seem we are doing this backwards but the Camaro is something we are going to finish to flip and sale and the G-van will stay around for a while. It will see some long road trips and some light trailer towing. I would not be surprised at all if the 6.0/4L80E/3.08 gear pulls down 20+ mpg highway in the Van.

do you plan on towing in OD for the most part? 3.08 seems steep, just asking what your experience was.

Re: It has been years but I own a TBI 305 again!

We already made the decision to keep this 2007 6.0L DBW. I just did some ohm checking between a 2006 Hemi Ram APPS and the 2007 GMT800 pedal. Ohmmeter in hand it looks like it is pretty much spot on pin to pin and uses the same exact 6 pin connector. Bolted the Ram pedal to the GMT800 firewall bracket and screwed the GMT800 pedal bracket onto the G20s firewall. Physicall everything bolted in like it was made for the van. Whether or not it will work, we will find out when the 6.0L goes in and gets wired up.

So this post turned away from TBI quickly. But rest assured that the 305 TBI is going into a 1980 Camaro.

That being said....LS6 cammed LQ4/4L80e is in. Complete with 1 3/4" Speed Engineering C10 swap shorty headers.

Well you sucked me in with the TBI title Fast. LOL Missed this thread somehow.

Can't blame you for the change. Would be a good thread for Vanning.com.

Look forward to hearing more about the lil 305 in the '80.

Well when I started the thread it was staying TBI. I was going to do a little work to it and stay TBI. But my brother and I talked it out what he was planning to do and both decided to just drop the 6.0/4L80E into it.

The 305 will get a MTC-1 cam, new timing set, resealed and some long tube headers. Also a carb intake and a 454 TBI. Should push the Camaro around just fine. Probably going to use a 700R4 in it.

Why the 454 TBI, Fast? I get it'''it's bigger, more CFM. But I didn't think the just to the bog block TBI was needed until you were over the 300hp threshold. Are you expecting that much out of the old L03 on just cam and headers?
